Chapter 4 - The Person Nancy Trusted

The backup footage played.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The dining room appeared again.
Nancy sat coloring.
Smiling.
Completely unaware.
Then someone entered.
My heart sank.
Because it was someone familiar.
Someone who had held Nancy’s hand.
Someone who had kissed her forehead.
Brandon.
The room became silent.
He immediately stepped forward.
“That doesn’t prove anything.”
The officer stopped him.
“Let us watch.”
The footage continued.
Brandon placed something on the table.
A small box.
Then he walked away.
Minutes later, Nancy touched it.
I covered my mouth.
Not because I wanted to believe it.
Because I didn’t.
I needed another explanation.
There had to be another explanation.
But then the footage showed Brandon returning.
Looking around.
Making sure nobody saw.
The police officers exchanged a glance.
Brandon’s face changed.
“You don’t understand.”
I looked at him.
“Then explain.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The doctor stepped closer.
“Your daughter almost died.”
Brandon looked down.
And for the first time, his anger disappeared.
But before anyone could question him, Evelyn suddenly stood.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
Everyone turned.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
She started crying.
“Brandon didn’t mean for Nancy to get hurt.”
The room froze.
Because that wasn’t a defense.
