Chapter 10 - THE CUSTODY FILE

The petition had been created eighteen months earlier.

Before tonight.

Before I told Richard I was leaving.

Before Lily turned four.

The attached evidence made my stomach hurt.

Photographs of me asleep on the sofa after being sick.

Caption:

Claire frequently unable to supervise Lily.

A video of me crying in the laundry room after Richard and I argued.

Caption:

Documented emotional instability.

A clip of me carrying Lily through the front door while she screamed.

Caption:

Child visibly distressed in mother’s care.

I remembered that day.

Lily had fallen and scraped her knee.

She was screaming because it hurt.

Vanessa’s camera captured six seconds.

Not the blood.

Not the fall.

Only me carrying a sobbing child.

Every ordinary moment could become evidence if edited carefully enough.

“Vanessa.”

She looked at me.

“You filmed these.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Mom told me to document family problems.”

Olivia shook her head.

“Not for this.”

“You told me Richard might need protection.”

“Financial protection.”

“You never said that.”

Richard stared at his sister.

“How many videos?”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Hundreds.”

My chest tightened.

“For Thomas?”

“No.”

“For Olivia?”

“Mostly.”

Olivia snapped, “I asked you to record Claire because Richard said she threatened divorce.”

I looked at Richard.

He frowned.

“I never said that.”

Olivia’s face changed.

Another lie exposed.

“Who told you?” Julian asked.

Olivia didn’t answer.

We already knew.

Thomas.

He had been creating conflict even through information.

Tell Olivia Claire threatens divorce.

Tell Vanessa Richard needs evidence.

Tell Richard Claire has nowhere to go.

Then wait.

People do terrible things when manipulation gives their existing flaws permission.

I opened the file properties.

Document author:

Hale Domestic Strategy Group.

Julian recognized the name.

“They do high-end private family litigation consulting.”

Richard stared.

“I never hired them.”

“Somebody did.”

Billing contact:

T. Bennett Family Holdings.

Again.

Thomas.

My supposedly dead grandfather-in-law had been preparing to weaponize my daughter against me.

“Why?” I whispered.

Julian answered carefully.

“To keep the ring close?”

Maybe.

But that seemed insufficient.

If I left without Lily, I would come back.

If Richard pursued custody, I would spend money, time, and energy defending myself instead of investigating Evelyn.

Thomas didn’t need Richard to win.

He needed me distracted.

I looked at Richard.

His face had changed.

“You were going to keep Lily.”

“I didn’t know about this.”

“But upstairs you said she stays.”

He swallowed.

“I was angry.”

“You keep saying that like anger is another person controlling your mouth.”

He flinched.

Good.

Then he did something unexpected.

He sat down.

Not dramatically.

He simply looked tired.

“I’m sorry.”

I stared.

He continued.

“What I did tonight was disgusting.”

Olivia immediately said, “Richard—”

He held up a hand.

“No.”

She stopped.

Maybe for the first time in his life.

He looked at me.

“I humiliated you because I knew the room would let me.”

That was more honest than any apology I expected.

“And I knew you wouldn’t fight back because Lily was there.”

My throat tightened.

“You scared her.”

“I know.”

“You’ve scared me before too.”

He looked down.

“I know.”

I didn’t forgive him.

But something shifted.

Truth, even late, changes the floor beneath a conversation.

“I’m still leaving.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“And Lily is coming.”

He hesitated.

Then nodded again.

Olivia stared at her son as if he had betrayed her.

Perhaps in her world, accountability was betrayal.

Julian continued reviewing the custody file.

Then he found something else.

“This petition has supporting financial statements.”

“What kind?”

“Claire’s.”

I frowned.

“I don’t have financial statements.”

He turned the laptop.

A report showed my personal account balance.

My design income.

Credit score.

Monthly spending.

All accurate.

Then a second page listed a trust account.

$6.4 million.

Beneficiary:

Claire Evelyn Hart.

I laughed nervously.

“That isn’t mine.”

Julian didn’t laugh.

“What?”

“I don’t have six million dollars.”

He looked at the account number.

His face changed.

“I know this bank.”

“So?”

“It’s the Sterling family private bank.”

My heart started pounding.

The trust had been opened thirty-two years earlier.

Three months after I was born.

Trustee:

Julian Sterling.

Julian stared at the screen.

“I did not open this.”

Olivia went pale.

Then another trustee name appeared.

Thomas Bennett.

The impossible trust had been jointly controlled by my uncle and the man who may have been my father.
