Chapter 15 - MY MOTHER’S VOICE

I called back immediately.
No answer.
Again.
Voicemail.
Again.
Nothing.
“Trace the number,” Richard said.
Julian was already checking.
Prepaid line.
No account name.
No easy location.
I stared at the screen.
“Mom.”
The word felt impossible.
For fifteen years, I had used it only in memory.
Now she had said my name.
Claire.
Exactly the way she used to.
No one could fake the tiny pause before the second syllable.
No one except perhaps someone who had studied her for years.
I hated that Thomas had made me doubt even recognition.
Then another message arrived.
Audio file.
EVELYN_01.
I pressed play.
My mother’s voice.
“Claire, if the call was interrupted, listen carefully.”
I sat down.
Lily climbed into my lap.
I almost stopped the recording.
Then I realized my mother had made this message knowing Lily might be beside me.
“Thomas has the copied maternity file. He has the false cassette.”
False.
Julian leaned closer.
“The original recording has never been inside Sterling Vault 4827.”
My heart pounded.
Then why had Thomas stolen the cassette?
A decoy.
“I moved the real recording before I disappeared.”
My mother inhaled shakily.
“I hid it somewhere Thomas could never enter without exposing himself.”
The recording paused.
Then:
“The Bennett house.”
Every person in the room froze.
Richard looked around.
Olivia whispered, “No.”
Evelyn continued.
“Thomas spent decades searching Sterling property because he believed I would trust my own family.”
A faint, sad laugh.
“I didn’t.”
Julian closed his eyes.
That hurt him.
“But I knew he would never search the home where his son lived. Too many questions. Too much risk.”
Olivia stared at the old Bennett walls around us.
The evidence had been inside her house.
Possibly for decades.
“I hid the original cassette behind the orchid panel in Thomas Bennett’s library before Claire was born.”
We all turned toward the library.
The carved wood panel behind Thomas’s former desk had floral patterns.
I had seen them hundreds of times.
One was an orchid.
Richard ran.
We followed.
Julian examined the panel.
Found a narrow groove.
I removed my ring.
The metal key tooth fit perfectly.
But the panel didn’t open.
“One key,” Julian whispered.
“Needs two.”
Adeline’s ring.
My mother continued in the audio.
“Adeline has the second key.”
I stared at Vanessa’s phone.
“She knows.”
“Yes,” Julian said.
The recording continued.
“I kept Adeline away from Claire because Thomas convinced her that Claire’s existence cost her everything.”
My stomach tightened.
“He raised my daughter to believe her baby sister replaced her.”
Adeline.
My sister.
Raised on resentment.
“He told her I chose Claire.”
Evelyn’s voice broke.
“I never chose between my daughters. He chose for me.”
Lily put her small hand over mine.
I kissed her hair.
Then Evelyn said:
“Adeline learned the truth only three months ago.”
That explained her involvement with Thomas.
Maybe she was pretending cooperation.
Maybe not.
“She agreed to help me recover the real cassette.”
Julian whispered, “Then the archive theft—”
“Was staged,” I said.
Adeline helped Thomas steal the false cassette so he would believe he finally had the original.
My mother had been moving pieces too.
Not perfectly.
Not safely.
But deliberately.
Then the recording changed tone.
“Claire, there is something I did not know until recently.”
I felt cold.
“Thomas did not act alone when he altered the Sterling trust.”
Julian stopped breathing.
“There was another person.”
Olivia closed her eyes.
Maybe she already knew.
My mother continued.
“That person is still alive.”
Richard whispered, “Who?”
The audio crackled.
Then:
“And Thomas is afraid of them.”
Everyone went still.
If Thomas Bennett had spent thirty-three years controlling Olivia, manipulating Adeline, stealing my trust, falsifying deaths, watching my daughter, and hunting my mother—
who frightened him?
Evelyn continued.
“I learned the truth from the original financial ledger.”
Julian whispered, “What ledger?”
“The one the two orchid rings open.”
So the panel didn’t only contain a cassette.
It contained financial evidence.
“The ledger shows every stolen transfer, every forged beneficiary, and every person paid to keep silent.”
I looked toward Olivia.
She was crying now.
“The final name is the reason I stayed dead.”
My skin prickled.
“Claire, you must not open that panel with Richard in the room.”
Silence.
I slowly turned.
Richard stared at the phone.
“What?”
My mother’s recorded voice continued.
“Richard does not know the truth.”
His face drained.
“Neither does Olivia.”
Olivia looked genuinely shocked.
“But someone in their immediate family does.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Julian’s eyes moved between Richard and Vanessa.
Then Evelyn said:
“The person helping Thomas is the same person who told him Claire still wore my orchid ring.”
Nobody moved.
The birthday party.
I had worn the ring outside my blouse.
Guests had seen it.
Vanessa had recorded it.
Olivia had reacted.
Richard had been there.
But the message to Thomas came before Julian asked about the inscription.
Someone inside the house had recognized the ring immediately.
My mother continued.
“Do not trust the person who claims they first saw the ring tonight.”
Vanessa whispered, “That could be anyone.”
Then the library door slammed shut behind us.
We all turned.
Lily was no longer beside me.
My heart stopped.
“Lily?”
No answer.
I ran toward the door.
Locked.
“Lily!”
Richard pulled at the handle.
“Lily!”
A speaker hidden somewhere inside the library crackled.
Thomas’s voice.
“You should have brought the ring when I asked.”
I froze.
He was connected to the house again.
Then Lily’s voice came faintly through the speaker.
“Mommy?”
I screamed her name.
Thomas laughed softly.
“She’s safe.”
I slammed my palm against the door.
“If you touch her—”
“I won’t.”
“Where is she?”
“Ask the person who opened the side entrance.”
Everyone stared at each other.
Someone inside the house had let Thomas’s people reach Lily.
The speaker crackled again.
“Claire, your mother lied about one thing.”
My blood went cold.
“What?”
“She did choose between her daughters.”
“Shut up.”
“She chose you.”
“No.”
“And Adeline knows it.”
A second voice came through.
Female.
Adeline.
“Claire.”
I stopped breathing.
My sister sounded calm.
Too calm.
“I have Lily.”
Richard rammed his shoulder against the locked door.
“Where is my daughter?”
Adeline ignored him.
“Bring your ring to the orchid panel.”
I looked toward the carved wall.
“You said Mom told me not to go to Thomas.”
“I’m not Thomas.”
“Are you helping him?”
Silence.
“Adeline?”
Then my sister whispered:
“I’m helping myself.”
The line cut.
At the same moment, someone began pounding on the outside of the library door.
Three hard blows.
Olivia backed away.
Richard grabbed a heavy fireplace tool.
Julian stared at the orchid panel.
Vanessa’s phone rang again.
This time the caller name wasn’t Thomas.
It wasn’t Evelyn.
It was one word.
MICHAEL.
Richard’s supposedly dead father.
Olivia’s husband.
The man she swore knew nothing about Vanessa’s real father.
The man buried in a different cemetery from Thomas.
Olivia saw the name and collapsed into the chair.
“No.”
Richard stared at her.
“Dad?”
The phone kept ringing.
Vanessa’s hand shook as she answered.
A man spoke.
His voice was quiet.
“Olivia.”
She began crying.
Richard went white.
He knew the voice.
So did Vanessa.
Michael Bennett.
Alive.
Then he said:
“Do not open that panel.”
Olivia whispered, “Michael, where are you?”
He ignored her.
“Claire, if you open it with Adeline’s ring, Thomas gets exactly what he has wanted for thirty-three years.”
I gripped my orchid ring.
“What?”
A pounding sound came from the other side of the library door again.
Michael’s breathing became urgent.
“The two rings do not merely open the evidence compartment.”
Julian stared at the wall.
“What else?”
Michael answered:
“They transfer control of the Sterling trust.”
Silence.
My $6.4 million trust.
Possibly much more.
Then Michael said the sentence that changed everything again.
“And Claire, that trust was never created for you.”
My hand went numb.
“Then who?”
Michael inhaled.
“It was created for Lily.”
My four-year-old daughter.
Before she was born.
Before I met Richard.
Before any of this should have been possible.
I stared at the locked door while Lily’s faint crying came through the hidden speaker.
Someone had prepared a trust for my daughter decades before her birth.
