Chapter 9 - TWO RINGS, ONE LOCK

Julian examined the ring beneath the library lamp.

He pressed the tiny indentation with the tip of a paper clip.

A narrow section of the inner band shifted.

I stared.

Inside was a sliver of metal.

A key tooth.

“Your grandmother designed these rings,” Julian said.

“For jewelry?”

“For privacy.”

I looked at him.

“That sounds dramatic.”

“It was.”

For the first time, he almost smiled.

“Our mother distrusted banks.”

“What did the rings open?”

“Private archive boxes.”

“Vault 4827?”

“Possibly.”

“You said Thomas already opened the vault.”

“The room.”

“Not the box?”

Julian nodded.

The stolen maternity file and cassette may have been deliberately visible.

Decoys.

“Then what does Thomas actually want?”

“My guess?”

“The locked box.”

“Containing?”

Julian looked at Olivia.

She whispered, “Original Sterling trust documents.”

Julian turned.

“You knew?”

“Thomas talked about them.”

“What trust?”

Olivia looked at me.

“The one Evelyn discovered he had altered.”

My stomach tightened.

Everything returned to money.

Assets.

Control.

“What did he alter?”

Olivia hesitated.

“Beneficiaries.”

Julian’s expression hardened.

“Whose?”

“Your father’s.”

Julian stepped closer.

“If Thomas forged Sterling trust documents—”

“He did.”

“You have proof?”

“I had proof.”

“Where?”

“Evelyn had it.”

The ring again.

My mother hadn’t only run from Thomas.

She had taken evidence.

“What is Adeline’s ring for?”

Julian looked at the photograph.

“Two-key system.”

“Both required?”

“For certain boxes.”

I understood.

Thomas had Adeline’s ring.

He needed mine.

That was why he had watched me for years.

Why the necklace mattered.

Why Olivia’s reaction at Lily’s birthday frightened Vanessa into lowering her phone.

The ring had never been jewelry to them.

It was access.

Richard stood near the doorway.

Quiet.

I almost forgot he was there.

Then he said, “Claire isn’t going.”

I turned.

“We already covered this.”

“If Thomas is dangerous—”

“He may be my father.”

“And that makes it safer?”

“No.”

“Then stop.”

I stared at him.

“You’re scared.”

“Obviously.”

“Interesting.”

His face tightened.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“You weren’t scared when Lily watched you humiliate me.”

“I apologized.”

“No, you didn’t.”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because he hadn’t.

Not once.

“You told me I deserved it.”

He looked at Lily.

She was asleep on the sofa now, curled beneath Julian’s jacket.

Richard lowered his voice.

“I was angry.”

“So was I.”

“That’s different.”

“No.”

For the first time, he seemed to hear himself from outside his own head.

He looked away.

I didn’t need his apology tonight.

I needed distance.

Julian found an address embedded in Thomas’s message metadata.

A private office building near White Plains.

Not far.

Thomas expected me within two hours.

Julian said, “We should not walk into a location he selected.”

I agreed.

Not because Richard said no.

Because Julian was right.

“We need more information first.”

Vanessa looked at her screenshots.

“I might have it.”

She searched old messages.

Then opened one from six months earlier.

Thomas B: If Evelyn’s girl ever leaves the Bennett house, notify me immediately.

I stared.

“The Bennett house?”

Vanessa nodded.

Another message.

Keep her close. Richard’s temper is useful.

I felt sick.

Richard read it.

His face drained.

“What?”

Thomas had known Richard’s weakness.

Like everyone else.

“What does he mean my temper is useful?”

I answered.

“He expected you to keep me controlled.”

Richard stared at the floor.

Thomas had positioned him without Richard knowing.

But Richard had still chosen every cruel word.

The manipulation explained context.

Not responsibility.

Vanessa opened another message.

If she tries to leave, Olivia knows what to do.

We all turned toward Olivia.

She looked confused.

“No.”

“What were you supposed to do?”

“I don’t know.”

Vanessa searched.

Then found an attachment.

An unsigned legal document.

PETITION FOR EMERGENCY CUSTODY OF LILY BENNETT.

My body went cold.

Petitioner:

Richard Bennett.

I looked at him.

He stared at the screen.

“I never signed that.”

The petition was prepared.

Waiting.

Thomas’s strategy had always included Lily.

If I left, Richard would be pushed to use our daughter to pull me back.

And given what Richard had said upstairs—

Lily stays.

The trap had nearly worked without him even knowing it existed.
