Chapter 5 - THE VAULT NUMBER INSIDE THE RING

Olivia reached the library first.
Julian followed.
So did I.
Richard shouted after us, but I barely heard him.
Olivia crossed behind Thomas Bennett’s old desk and pulled open the lower cabinet.
There was a small wall safe behind it.
She entered a code.
Wrong.
Again.
Wrong.
Julian stopped in the doorway.
“What are you looking for?”
“Nothing.”
“You sprinted across your own house for nothing?”
Olivia turned.
Her composure was gone.
“This has nothing to do with Claire.”
“Then why did Vanessa receive a message telling her to take the ring?”
Olivia looked at Vanessa.
Pure fury.
“You showed them?”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I’m tired of being ordered around.”
“By who?” I asked.
Vanessa looked at her phone.
Not Olivia.
The caller.
Thomas B.
Olivia stepped closer.
“Give me that phone.”
“No.”
Richard entered.
“What is happening?”
His mother snapped, “Stay out of it.”
Richard looked stunned.
Probably the first time in his life Olivia had excluded him from family information.
Julian examined the ring.
“Sterling vault references used four-digit family codes until the late nineties.”
“What vault?” I asked.
“Our private archive.”
“Bank?”
“No. Family storage.”
“Where?”
“New York.”
Olivia laughed.
“You’re chasing ghosts.”
Julian looked at her.
“Then why do you care?”
“I don’t.”
“You do.”
I looked toward the safe.
“What’s inside?”
Olivia said nothing.
Richard moved beside me.
“This is insane. Claire, take Lily upstairs.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
His jaw tightened.
“You’re still my wife.”
“And you’re still the man who shoved my face into a cake.”
His eyes flicked toward Julian.
The shame wasn’t about what he had done.
It was about who had seen it.
I hated that realization.
Julian handed me the ring.
“Don’t give this to anyone.”
Olivia laughed.
“It belongs to the Sterling family.”
I looked at her.
“You spent six years calling it junk.”
That silenced her.
Vanessa’s phone rang again.
THOMAS B.
This time she answered.
Olivia shouted, “Don’t!”
Vanessa put it on speaker.
A male voice filled the library.
“Vanessa?”
Nobody moved.
The voice was older.
Controlled.
Not familiar to me.
Vanessa swallowed.
“Who is this?”
Silence.
Then the man laughed softly.
“You know who I am.”
“No, I don’t.”
“Your mother does.”
Every eye turned to Olivia.
Her face had lost all color.
Julian stepped closer to the phone.
“Who is this?”
The line went silent again.
Then the man said, “Julian Sterling.”
Not a question.
Julian’s expression hardened.
“You know me?”
“Oh, yes.”
“Name.”
The man ignored him.
“Claire should not have brought that ring back into the Bennett house.”
My stomach tightened.
“How do you know where I am?”
The caller continued.
“And Julian should have stayed away from Evelyn’s daughter.”
I gripped Lily’s hand.
“Who are you?”
His voice changed slightly.
Almost gentle.
“Claire, your mother tried very hard to protect you.”
“From who?”
Silence.
“From you?”
The man exhaled.
Then Olivia grabbed Vanessa’s phone.
She ended the call.
“Enough.”
Vanessa stared at her.
“You know him.”
“No.”
“Stop lying!”
It was the first time I had ever heard Vanessa yell at Olivia.
Olivia slapped her.
Hard.
Vanessa staggered.
Richard stepped forward.
“Mom!”
Olivia looked immediately horrified by her own loss of control.
Vanessa slowly straightened.
A red mark formed across her cheek.
“You know what?” she whispered. “I’m done.”
“Vanessa.”
“No.”
She opened a hidden folder on her phone.
“I kept copies.”
Olivia froze.
“Copies of what?”
“All the messages you made me delete.”
Julian stepped toward her.
“From Thomas B?”
Vanessa nodded.
“For how long?”
“Two years.”
I stared at her.
“Two years?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“I didn’t know who he was.”
“But you were communicating with him.”
“Mom told me he handled old Bennett family matters.”
Olivia snapped, “Shut up.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“That’s exactly what you always say.”
She opened the folder.
Hundreds of screenshots.
Payments.
Instructions.
Photographs.
Then I saw my own face.
A candid photo of me leaving Lily’s preschool.
Another at the grocery store.
Another outside the Bennett house.
Taken before Richard and I married.
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“They were watching me?”
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“I think so.”
“How long?”
“The oldest photo is seven years old.”
Richard stared at his mother.
“We’ve only known Claire six years.”
Nobody answered.
Julian took the phone.
He scrolled until he found an image attached to a message from Thomas B.
A scanned document.
The header read:
STERLING FAMILY ARCHIVE — VAULT 4827.
The same four numbers engraved inside my ring.
Underneath was a handwritten note.
EVELYN — ORIGINAL MATERNITY RECORD / CHILD SURVIVED / DO NOT RELEASE TO BENNETT.
I stared at it.
“Child survived.”
Me.
Julian’s face went hard.
“What happened when Claire was born?”
Olivia looked toward the door.
I blocked it.
“Tell me.”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why do you have access to messages about my birth?”
“No answer.”
Vanessa kept scrolling.
Then she stopped.
“Oh my God.”
“What?”
She turned the phone.
A photograph filled the screen.
Hospital room.
A much younger Olivia.
Beside a bed.
My mother lying unconscious.
And in Olivia’s arms—
a newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket.
On the back of the scanned photograph, someone had written:
Claire — 11:42 p.m.
Held by Olivia Bennett before transfer.
My knees weakened.
