Chapter 15 - DAVID LOSES HIS JOB

The board removed David as chief operating officer.
Not because he stole the money.
Because he concealed unauthorized transactions and failed to protect company controls.
He came to Megan’s house afterward.
“I deserved it.”
I almost respected him for saying that.
Almost.
“You knew what your mother was doing.”
“Some of it.”
“You keep shrinking it.”
“I’m trying not to claim I knew things I didn’t.”
That was fair.
I hated that it was fair.
He had learned the same discipline I had.
“What did you know?”
“I knew she used your signature twice before the lake house.”
“Three times.”
“Yes.”
“I knew she moved money from our joint account.”
“And Lily’s.”
“Yes.”
“I knew she exaggerated how bad the company was.”
“When?”
“Not until recently.”
I watched him.
“Did you ever take money personally?”
“No.”
Marcus’s review had not found any.
That mattered.
But financial benefit was not the only betrayal.
David had benefited from peace.
From preserving the family image.
From not confronting Evelyn.
From staying the good son.
Sometimes complicity is purchased with comfort instead of cash.
“What do you want now?” I asked.
“My family.”
“Which one?”
He flinched.
“That’s not fair.”
“It is exactly fair.”
For years, “family” meant Evelyn, Olivia, Bennett Development, reputation, legacy.
Lily and I were expected to fit around it.
David looked at the floor.
“You and Lily.”
“And your mother?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then you don’t know what you want.”
He started crying.
I had seen David cry twice before.
When his father died.
When Lily was born.
I did not comfort him.
Some pain needs to belong to the person who created it.
Then he told me something new.
“Mom asked me to sign divorce-preparation papers.”
My stomach tightened.
“When?”
“Before the wedding.”
“What papers?”
“She had a lawyer draft a separation outline.”
“For us?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She said once you found the lake-house loan, you’d leave.”
“So she prepared for it.”
“She said I needed to protect Bennett assets.”
“From me.”
“Yes.”
There it was.
Evelyn did not merely expect discovery.
She expected our marriage to fracture.
Maybe she counted on it.
“Did you sign?”
“No.”
A small reward.
One line he had not crossed.
“Where are the documents?”
“I kept them.”
He handed Hannah a copy.
The proposed agreement contained a section regarding Lily’s custodial accounts.
It stated that David would retain “administrative oversight of all Bennett-originated child assets.”
I stared at the phrase.
“What does that mean?”
Hannah frowned.
“It appears intended to separate certain assets from ordinary marital-property disputes.”
“Would it give David control?”
“Possibly, depending on the actual account documents. This draft itself does nothing.”
Still, the intent mattered.
Evelyn expected my marriage to break and wanted Bennett money connected to Lily kept on David’s side.
Then Hannah found something else.
The document was dated three weeks before I discovered the lake-house lien.
