Patricia changed her statement three days later.
Not because she suddenly liked me.
Because Evelyn accused her of stealing.
The outside audit report identified Patricia as a related-party vendor.
Evelyn’s attorney responded publicly to the board by claiming Patricia misrepresented services and diverted company money without Evelyn’s knowledge.
Patricia had spent years helping Evelyn.
That accusation broke the alliance.

Evelyn directed mortgage payment routing.
Evelyn discussed Florida renovations.
And, most importantly to me, Evelyn directed Patricia to coordinate the lake-house loan.
One email read:
Use Claire’s family authorization account. She has already agreed through David.
Patricia replied:
I need confirmation.
Evelyn:
David confirmed. Do not bother Claire during her product launch.
David had not confirmed my approval.
He admitted that.
But he had told Evelyn earlier that he would “handle Claire.”
Evelyn converted his willingness to manage me into supposed authorization.
Then another email appeared.
Patricia:
If Claire challenges the signature, this becomes my problem too.
Evelyn:
She won’t. David knows how to keep his wife calm.
I closed my eyes.
That sentence represented my marriage better than any dramatic betrayal.

Not respected.
Managed.
David read it beside me.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“I hate that I made her believe that.”
“You did.”
No softening.
He nodded.
Then Patricia provided an attachment.
A scan of my signature.

CLAIRE CLEAN SIGNATURE.
Created from an old property document.
Sent by Evelyn.
There was the tool.
The image used repeatedly to create false authorizations.
Not every forged document necessarily used the same file.
But several signatures matched exactly.
Hannah engaged a document examiner.
The preliminary comparison found identical digital characteristics across multiple documents.
Again, not magic.
Support.
Then the family case shifted.
Patricia withdrew her statement supporting Evelyn.
She submitted a corrected one saying Evelyn had asked her to make financial arrangements using documents Patricia later learned Claire disputed.
She did not claim to know why Evelyn slapped Lily.
Good.

The power around Evelyn narrowed.
David was cooperating.
Olivia opposed her.
Patricia broke away.
The board removed her payment authority.
Her access to Olivia’s inheritance was revoked.
My accounts were locked against her.
That made Evelyn more dangerous in one sense.
She had less to lose.
Then Megan found a small tracking device attached beneath the rear bumper of my car.
My stomach dropped.
We did not touch it.
Police were contacted.
The device was documented.
No one immediately knew who placed it.
