Chapter 9 - EVELYN STRIKES BACK

Evelyn did not call Olivia.
She called everyone else.
By noon, family members were receiving messages.
Claire is trying to destroy the company.
Claire attacked me at Olivia’s wedding.
Claire manipulated Olivia into freezing estate assets.
Claire is using Lily as a weapon.
That last one made me furious.
I wanted to respond publicly.
Hannah told me not to.
“You have documents. She has a narrative. Don’t trade your advantage.”
I hated good advice when it required silence.
Then Evelyn filed a police report about the slap.
That was her right.
I had hit her.
I did not pretend otherwise.
When contacted, I described exactly what happened.
I did not say she “made me.”
I said I reacted badly after she struck Lily and reached toward her again.
The wedding server and several guests had witnessed the sequence.
A video existed from someone’s phone.
It showed Lily being slapped.
Me rushing over.
David grabbing my hand.
Then my slap.
No ambiguity about sequence.
The report did not magically disappear because Evelyn acted first.
Accountability was not a contest.
Meanwhile, Evelyn’s attorney sent a demand accusing me of defamation and theft of confidential Bennett Development records.
I had stolen nothing.
David provided company records he was authorized to access.
My own account documents belonged to me.
Still, the letter was designed to frighten.
Then David received something worse.
The board of Bennett Development scheduled an emergency meeting.
Evelyn planned to remove him as chief operating officer.
“For what?” I asked.
“Disloyalty.”
I almost laughed.
Apparently cooperation with his own wife after helping hide forged documents qualified as betrayal.
David did not laugh.
“If she removes me, I lose system access.”
That mattered.
The audit had barely started.
Marcus needed records.
Hannah told David to preserve only material he was legally entitled to retain.
No secret downloads.
No reckless copying.
The mistake I expected came anyway.
David panicked.
That night, he accessed an archived folder from home and forwarded several documents to himself.
The security system flagged it.
Evelyn suspended his access the next morning.
I stared at him when he told me.
“You did exactly what Hannah told you not to do.”
“I was afraid she’d delete them.”
“You made yourself look like the person mishandling records.”
“I know.”
For once, he did not defend himself.
That was progress.
But consequences were real.
He was placed on administrative leave.
The board began reviewing his conduct.
Evelyn had weakened both of us using mistakes we actually made.
Then Marcus found something from the documents already preserved.
A ledger labeled FAMILY ADVANCES.
My joint-account transfer appeared.
The lake-house loan proceeds appeared.
Olivia’s inherited funds appeared.
So did Lily’s custodial withdrawals.
Each line had initials beside it.
EB.
Evelyn Bennett.
But several had another set.
DB.
David Bennett.
I looked at my husband.
“What are those?”
His face turned gray.
He knew.
May you like
He had approved more than he admitted.
📖 The internal ledger placed David’s initials beside several family transfers, forcing me to confront whether my husband was still minimizing his own role. 👇
