Chapter 11 - The Child Jason Tried to Erase
After Jason was led outside, no one knew whether the funeral should continue.
The white casket remained beneath the lilies.
The organist sat motionless.
Rachel cried silently in the last pew while an investigator waited beside her.
Daniel approached Emily.
“There is another page.”
Emily wiped her face.
“What could possibly be left?”
Daniel looked toward Margaret and Thomas.
“This part concerns Lily’s baby.”
Margaret began shaking.
“The hospital said the baby died with her.”
Daniel’s expression softened.
“That is not exactly what happened.”
Emily stared at him.
“What do you mean?”
Nora stepped closer.
“When Lily arrived at the hospital, doctors performed an emergency C-section.”
Margaret covered her mouth.
“The baby had a heartbeat.”
Thomas gripped the pew.
“Had?”
Nora nodded carefully.
“A weak one. He was transferred immediately to a neonatal unit under restricted identity.”
Emily’s knees nearly gave way.
“A son?”
“Yes.”
Margaret began sobbing.
“Where is he?”
Daniel held up one hand.
“He is alive.”
The words shattered every remaining wall inside Emily.
She fell into her father’s arms.
Thomas wept openly.
Margaret whispered, “My grandson is alive?”
Daniel nodded.
“Lily feared Jason would gain control over the baby’s trust, so she signed emergency guardianship instructions before her death.”
Emily looked up.
“Who has him?”
“A licensed temporary guardian arranged through the court. He has been protected under a confidential medical name.”
Rachel stared from the back pew.
“Jason didn’t know?”
“No,” Nora said. “The hospital restricted information after staff documented his behavior.”
Emily’s joy collided with horror.
“What behavior?”
Nora looked down.
“When Jason arrived, he asked whether the baby’s survival changed the insurance payout.”
The church fell silent.
Margaret closed her eyes as if struck.
Daniel continued.
“He also attempted to sign transfer paperwork while Lily was still in surgery.”
Thomas’s voice became low and dangerous.
“Transfer to where?”
“A private facility chosen by him.”
Emily understood.
A place where no one in Lily’s family would know the child existed.
Daniel unfolded the final page of the will.
“Lily named the baby Noah.”
Margaret repeated the name through tears.
“Noah.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“And she named you permanent guardian if she did not survive.”
Emily could not speak.
“You do not have to decide today,” Daniel said.
Emily looked at Lily’s portrait.
“Yes, I do.”
