Chapter 1 - Stay Where You Are

The sealed envelope struck the polished white casket with a sharp crack.
White lilies trembled.
Every whisper inside the crowded Texas church died at once.
Jason Reed had been standing beside his pregnant wife’s coffin with another woman wrapped around his arm.
Not behind him.
Not several pews away.
Beside him—where Lily should have been standing if she were alive.
Rachel’s long brunette curls rested against his black suit. Her fingers clung possessively to his sleeve as though she had already claimed his house, his name, and the life Lily had left behind.
Daniel Hayes, Lily’s attorney, stepped between Jason and the center aisle.
“Stay where you are.”
His voice was calm.
That made it more dangerous.
Jason’s expression tightened. For the past twenty minutes, he had performed grief beautifully—lowered eyes, slow breaths, one hand resting over his heart whenever someone glanced his way.
Now the performance slipped.
“This can wait,” he said.
He reached for the envelope.
Daniel slid it beyond his fingertips and placed one steady palm over the seal.
“No,” Daniel replied. “Lily said it couldn’t.”
A shiver passed through the congregation.
In the front pew, Emily Carter stopped breathing.
Lily’s older sister had spent the entire service gripping the edge of the wooden bench so hard her fingers had gone pale. She had promised their father she would not cause a scene.
She had promised she would not cross the aisle and tear Rachel away from Jason with her bare hands.
But seeing Rachel lean against him beside Lily’s casket had made restraint feel like betrayal.
Jason gave a dry laugh.
“My wife was heavily medicated during her final weeks. She wasn’t thinking clearly.”
Daniel opened his worn leather briefcase.
He removed a second document bearing the same embossed seal.
Emily stared at it.
Two documents.
Not one.
Daniel broke the envelope open.
The tearing sound seemed louder than the church bell.
Rachel’s fingers tightened around Jason’s arm.
“Jason…” she whispered. “What did she know?”
Jason turned toward her so quickly that his mask disappeared completely.
Fear.
Real fear.
Daniel unfolded the first page and began.
“To my husband, Jason Reed…”
Jason released Rachel’s hand.
He stepped backward and struck the front pew with the back of his knee.
Then Daniel looked up.
“You know why I changed it.”
The congregation turned toward Jason.
His face lost all color.

And for the first time since Lily’s death, Emily realized her sister had not gone quietly.
👉 But the will was only Lily’s first move—and Jason had no idea who else was waiting to speak.
