Chapter 13 - Jason’s Last Lie

From jail, Jason hired the most expensive probate attorney in the county.
He challenged everything.
The will.
The sworn statement.
Lily’s competency.
Emily’s guardianship.
Even Noah’s paternity.
His petition claimed Lily had been manipulated by Daniel and poisoned against her husband by her family.
He demanded control of the estate until the court could determine whether the documents were authentic.
For six weeks, Emily lived between the neonatal hospital and the courthouse.
Noah was tiny.
His fingers curled around hers with astonishing strength.
Every time she looked at him, she saw Lily.
The same small chin.
The same crease above the left eyebrow.
Emily whispered stories beside his incubator.
“Your mama loved thunderstorms.”
“She hated burnt coffee.”
“She sang off-key when she cooked.”
She never mentioned Jason.
Not yet.
Daniel prepared for the probate hearing.
Jason’s attorney attacked the date of the will.
“She was under medication.”
Daniel produced the notary.
“She was alert.”
“She was emotionally distressed.”
Daniel produced Lily’s physician.
“She was frightened, not incompetent.”
“She was pressured by her sister.”
Emily had not known about the will until the funeral.
Then Jason’s attorney made the final accusation.
“The signature is forged.”
Daniel opened his briefcase.
He removed a sealed video deposition.
Lily had recorded it in his office.
On the courtroom monitor, she appeared alive.
Pregnant.
Afraid.
But steady.
“My name is Lily Anne Carter Reed. I am signing this will freely.”
Emily pressed a hand to her mouth.
Lily continued.
“My husband has told people I am confused. I am not confused.”
Jason watched from the defense table.
For the first time, he could not interrupt her.
“I know about Rachel. I know about the money. I know Jason disabled the camera near the staircase.”
His attorney leaned toward him.
Jason did not respond.
Lily looked directly into the camera.
“If I die, Jason will call it an accident.”
The judge’s expression changed.
“He will say I was unstable. He will say Rachel acted alone. He will say my family manipulated me.”
Every lie Jason had used appeared in the exact order Lily predicted.
Then Lily placed one hand over her unborn child.
“My son deserves a life where fear is not mistaken for love.”
The courtroom was silent.
The judge upheld the will.
Jason received one dollar.
Nothing more.
But outside the courtroom, Daniel’s phone rang.

The criminal prosecutor had made a decision.
👉 Jason had lost Lily’s money, land, and child—but the state was about to decide how many years of freedom he would lose too.
