Chapter 4 - The First Sentence of the Will
Back inside the church, Daniel held the blurred pages at chest level.
Jason stared at him.
“You have no legal authority to turn my wife’s funeral into a spectacle.”
Daniel did not move.
“I am carrying out your wife’s written instructions.”
“My wife was confused.”
“Then you can challenge the will in probate court.”
Jason glanced toward the packed pews.
Several mourners had taken out their phones, but Daniel raised one hand.
“No recording. Lily requested witnesses, not entertainment.”
Slowly, the phones disappeared.
Daniel began reading.
“I, Lily Anne Carter Reed, being of sound mind and acting without coercion, revoke all previous wills and testamentary documents.”
Jason’s mouth tightened.
Rachel’s hand slipped from his sleeve.
Daniel continued.
“I make this declaration publicly because I have reason to believe my husband has misrepresented my mental condition, interfered with my medical care, and attempted to gain control of property that was never intended for him.”
A gasp moved through the church.
Emily rose from the pew.
Jason pointed at Daniel.
“Stop.”
Daniel continued as if Jason had not spoken.
“To Jason Reed, I leave the sum of one dollar.”
Someone in the back whispered, “Oh my God.”
Rachel took one step away from Jason.
He noticed.
His expression hardened.
Daniel turned the page.
“The remainder of my estate shall not pass to my husband, directly or indirectly.”
Jason lunged forward.
Not at Daniel.
At the pages.
Daniel moved aside.
Thomas Carter stood and blocked Jason’s path.
“You heard him.”
Jason stared at the older man.
“You think this changes anything? I’m still her legal husband.”
Emily stepped beside her father.
“For now, that’s the only truth you have left.”
Jason looked toward the casket.
His voice became soft again.
“This is cruel. Lily was sick. She was paranoid.”
Daniel reached inside his briefcase.
He removed the second sealed document.
“This is not a duplicate will.”
Jason’s eyes locked onto it.
Daniel held it so the congregation could see the intact seal.
“This is Lily’s sworn statement.”
Rachel whispered, “Jason…”
He ignored her.
Daniel looked directly at Emily.
“Your sister named three people who would understand what happened if she died.”
Emily’s heart pounded.
“Who?”
“You’re one.”
Then Daniel turned toward the church doors.

“And the second witness just arrived.”
👉 When the sanctuary doors opened, Jason looked more frightened than he had when he lost the entire estate.
