Chapter 12 - Rachel’s Choice

Rachel gave her statement that afternoon.

She did not ask for a lawyer.

She did not ask Daniel for protection.

She asked for one thing.

“Will telling the truth help Lily’s baby?”

Sheriff Collins answered honestly.

“It may.”

Rachel stared at her hands.

Then she told them everything.

Jason had begun the affair seven months earlier.

He said his marriage was over.

He said Lily was emotionally unstable and refusing to accept a separation.

He promised Rachel they would marry after the baby was born.

But as the months passed, his questions changed.

He wanted to know whether Lily had spoken to attorneys.

Whether she kept passwords in her desk.

Whether Rachel could create invoices through Red Oak Consulting.

“I knew the payments were strange,” Rachel admitted. “I told myself they were legal.”

She also admitted that Jason had asked her to attend the meeting at the house that night because he believed Lily would behave better with a witness present.

Instead, Lily confronted them both.

She held printed bank records.

She told Rachel the money funding their vacations had been stolen from her inherited account.

Rachel had been horrified.

She tried to leave.

Jason blocked Lily at the staircase.

“When Lily fell, I wanted to call 911.”

“Why didn’t you?” the sheriff asked.

Rachel began crying.

“Jason took my phone.”

She said he searched Lily’s pockets, then the office.

Lily begged for help.

Rachel tried to reach the front door.

Jason told her that if she called anyone, he would tell police she had pushed Lily out of jealousy.

“And I believed him,” Rachel whispered.

“Why?”

“Because he showed me messages on his phone. Messages that made me look obsessed.”

The sheriff glanced at Daniel.

The trap Lily described.

Rachel finally escaped when Jason went upstairs.

Before leaving, she found her phone on the kitchen counter.

At 12:09, Jason sent the message telling her to delete everything.

She obeyed.

Until the funeral.

“Why did you come?” Emily asked later.

Rachel’s face crumpled.

“Because he said standing beside him would prove we had nothing to hide.”

Emily’s voice was cold.

“You stood where Lily’s widow should have stood.”

“I know.”

Rachel looked toward the nursery photograph Daniel had shown them.

“I can never undo that.”

“No,” Emily said. “You can’t.”

Rachel nodded.

“But I can stop protecting him.”

Her testimony gave prosecutors the final timeline they needed.

Jason’s accident story collapsed before sunset.

👉 Rachel had chosen the truth, but Jason still had one weapon left—the claim that Lily’s will was forged.
