Chapter 9 - The Man Jason Left Behind
The church doors opened again.
A man entered using a cane.
He was thin, pale, and moved with visible pain.
Emily had never seen him before.
Jason had.
His mouth opened.
“No.”
The man stopped halfway down the aisle.
“My name is Caleb Morgan.”
Rachel frowned.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Mr. Morgan worked for Jason Reed.”
Caleb looked toward Lily’s casket.
“I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner.”
Jason’s voice was sharp.
“You signed a confidentiality agreement.”
Caleb gave a tired smile.
“Confidentiality doesn’t cover fraud. Or obstruction.”
He reached inside his coat and removed a small digital recorder.
Daniel took it carefully.
Caleb explained that he had managed security and smart-home systems for Jason’s real estate company.
Two months before Lily’s death, Jason asked him to disable the interior staircase camera at the Reed residence.
“He said Lily wanted more privacy.”
Emily looked at Jason.
“Did she?”
Caleb shook his head.
“She called me the next day. She asked why the camera was offline.”
Jason spoke over him.
“He was fired for stealing.”
Caleb looked toward the congregation.
“I was fired because I restored the backup.”
Jason froze.
Caleb’s voice trembled, but he continued.
“The main camera was disabled. The cloud mirror wasn’t.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
Daniel asked, “What does the backup show?”
Caleb closed his eyes.
“It shows Jason and Lily arguing near the staircase. Rachel is visible near the living room doorway.”
Rachel began to cry.
“Does it show him pushing her?” Emily asked.
Caleb looked at her.
“No.”
Jason exhaled.
It was the first sign of relief he had shown.
Then Caleb continued.
“It shows Lily pulling away when Jason grabs her arm. She loses her balance.”
Jason lifted his chin.
“An accident.”
Caleb looked directly at him.
“Then it shows you standing over her while she begs for help.”
The relief disappeared.
“It shows you taking her phone.”
Jason said nothing.
“It shows you asking where the drive is.”
Emily’s body went numb.
Caleb’s voice cracked.
“And it shows you walking away while she says she can’t feel the baby moving.”
Margaret cried out.
Thomas held her as she folded against him.
Daniel’s expression remained controlled, but his hand tightened around the recorder.
Jason looked toward the side aisle.
For the first time, he seemed to consider running.
