Chapter 14 - The Verdict Lily Never Heard
Jason Reed went on trial nine months after Lily’s funeral.
The prosecution did not claim he intentionally pushed her.
They did not need to.
They proved that he grabbed her during an argument, causing her to lose her balance.
They proved he took her phone.
They proved he delayed emergency care while searching for evidence.
They proved he attempted to conceal the affair, steal estate funds, and manipulate Rachel into accepting blame.
The staircase footage played only for the jury.
Emily chose not to watch.
She had already seen enough in her imagination.
Nora testified about Lily’s injuries.
Caleb testified about the disabled camera.
Rachel testified for nearly four hours.
Jason stared at her the entire time.
She never looked at him.
Daniel authenticated Lily’s files and explained her instructions.
Then the prosecutor played one short audio recording.
Lily’s voice filled the courtroom.
“Jason, call an ambulance.”
A pause.
Then Jason’s voice.
“Tell me where the drive is.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Lily spoke again.
“My baby.”
Jason answered.
“The drive, Lily.”
That was all.
No screaming.
No dramatic confession.
Just a dying woman asking for help and a husband asking for evidence.
The jury deliberated for five hours.
Guilty of manslaughter.
Guilty of tampering with evidence.
Guilty of obstruction.
Guilty of financial fraud.
At sentencing, Jason finally spoke.
He blamed Rachel.
He blamed Lily’s family.
He blamed Daniel.
He blamed the hospital.
He blamed everyone except himself.
The judge listened.
Then she sentenced him to decades in prison.
“You did not lose control for one tragic second,” she told him. “You made a series of deliberate choices while your wife and unborn child were in mortal danger.”
Jason’s face remained blank until the bailiff touched his arm.
Then he looked at Emily.
“You think this brings her back?”
Emily stood.
“No.”
She held his gaze.
“But it stops you from hurting anyone else.”
He was taken away.
Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded around Daniel and Emily.
She gave only one statement.
“My sister was not confused. She was not weak. She was believed.”
