Chapter 10 - The Factory Where the Carter Empire Started

The Carter leather factory had been closed for twenty-three years.
Broken windows lined the brick building.
Rust covered the loading doors.
The family’s fortune began there with belts, wallets, and cheap work gloves.
Later, my father used overseas suppliers to hide illegal transfers.
The company outgrew the factory.
The secrets remained.
Police surrounded the property, but Marcus threatened to kill Ethan if anyone entered with me.
I carried the old wallet.
The memory chip was not inside.
Jonathan kept it secure.
Marcus did not know.
I walked into the factory alone.
Dust moved through strips of afternoon light.
Ethan sat tied to a chair beneath the old production platform.
His face was bruised.
But he was alive.
For one second, neither of us spoke.
Seven years disappeared.
Then Marcus stepped from behind a support column holding a gun.
“Put the wallet on the table.”
I did.
Ethan looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
“You tried to come back.”
“Every year.”
Marcus pressed the gun against his shoulder.
“Stop talking.”
I looked at my brother.
“You knew Daniel was your son.”
“Yes.”
“You watched him grow up.”
“From a distance.”
“You called him a beggar.”
His jaw tightened.
“I needed you to react.”
“The barbecue was part of the custody case.”
“Yes.”
“You took food from your own child to make me look unstable.”
“He was never supposed to hear the rest.”
“The rest?”
Marcus’s expression changed.
Ethan shouted, “Sarah, don’t give him the wallet.”
Marcus struck him.
I remained still.
“What rest?”
Marcus looked toward the old machines.
“You think the trust activated because Daniel turned seven.”
“That is what Jonathan said.”
“It activated because Dad’s system detected the boy inside the mansion.”
The wallet had recognized Daniel.
Other systems had too.
My father designed the trust to activate the first time Daniel entered a Carter family property after his seventh birthday.
Marcus invited us intentionally.
He needed the trust to activate.
“Why trigger something that suspended you?”
“Because the founder’s account could only open during succession review.”
He needed chaos.
The board meeting.
The archive fire.
The transfer.
Everything had been arranged so he could access the account while attention focused on me.
“You burned the archive.”
“Yes.”
“You kidnapped Ethan.”
“He knows the final code.”
Ethan laughed weakly.
“No. Daniel does.”
Marcus looked at me.
“He needs to speak one sentence into the wallet.”
“What sentence?”
“Our father’s motto.”
I knew it.
Every Carter employee knew it.
Family builds what money cannot buy.
The hypocrisy almost made me sick.
“You will never bring Daniel here.”
“I don’t need to.”
Marcus removed his phone.
A live video showed Daniel sitting inside a car beside Elaine.
His wife held a gun in her lap.
Elaine looked terrified.
Marcus had forced her.
May you like
“Call him,” Marcus ordered.
“Make him say the phrase.”
