Chapter 13 - The Second Bracelet

Police found Dr. Leonard Price in a private nursing facility under another name.

He had suffered a stroke two years earlier.

His speech was slow, but his memory remained clear.

I brought the blue hospital bracelet.

He began crying when he saw it.

“There were twins,” he said.

My hands went cold.

“Daniel has a twin?”

“Yes.”

“Where is the other child?”

Price looked toward the window.

“William took him.”

“My father?”

“He said one baby would remain with you. The other would protect the succession.”

Protect.

That poisonous word again.

“Why separate them?”

“Marcus demanded the pregnancy disappear. William refused. When he learned there were two boys, he created two legal identities.”

Daniel Carter.

And another child.

One raised away from the family.

A backup heir.

“What was his name?”

Price shook his head.

“William never told me.”

“Who took him from the hospital?”

“A woman from Carter security.”

Marcus’s former assistant, Helen Ward.

She retired in Vermont.

We located her records.

She had died three years earlier.

But tax filings showed she claimed a dependent child named Noah Ward.

Noah was seven.

The same birthday as Daniel.

A school photograph showed a boy with Daniel’s eyes and Marcus’s dark hair.

My son had a twin brother.

The board knew.

One director, Paul Henley, had paid Noah’s school tuition since Helen’s death.

Paul had argued most strongly against my control.

I confronted him at Carter Tower.

He closed the office door.

“Noah is safe.”

“Where?”

“I will not tell you until Marcus’s network is dismantled.”

“Marcus is in custody.”

“Marcus was never the highest authority.”

“Who was?”

Paul looked toward the founder’s portrait.

“William.”

“My father is dead.”

“His private governance system is not.”

William had created automated trusts, secret committees, and conditional payments designed to continue his control after death.

The inner board still followed his recorded instructions.

Noah was their preferred heir.

Daniel had grown up poor with me.

Noah had been raised and educated for succession.

Two brothers.

One loved openly.

One hidden as insurance.

“Does Noah know?”

“He knows his mother died. He believes Carter Group sponsors him.”

“I’m taking him home.”

“You cannot simply remove him.”

“I am his mother.”

“Legally, Helen Ward was.”

“Because my father forged documents.”

Paul looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

He opened a live security feed.

Noah sat inside a library at a private estate.

A silver-haired woman read beside him.

I recognized her from family photographs.

My grandmother, Evelyn Carter.

She had supposedly died ten years earlier.

Another staged death.

Another person hidden.

She looked toward the camera.

“I wondered when you would find us, Sarah.”

May you like

Then she placed one hand on Noah’s shoulder.

“Come alone, or you will never see your second son again.”
