Chapter 9 - The Child Marcus Refused to Claim

I replayed the recording.
The words did not change.
Daniel was Marcus’s biological son.
My brother’s child.
The room became painfully quiet.
Elaine lowered herself onto a chair.
“No.”
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, Marcus never…”
She could not finish.
I remembered the company retreat eight years earlier.
The night I became pregnant.
I had attended a dinner, drank one glass of wine, then woken in a guest suite with no memory of several hours.
Ethan found me frightened and disoriented the next morning.
He stayed beside me.
Weeks later, when I discovered I was pregnant, we assumed the child was his.
Marcus had insisted I keep the situation private.
He claimed he was protecting the family reputation.
My stomach turned.
“Did Marcus assault me?”
Elaine began crying.
The video continued.
Ethan slammed his hands on my father’s desk.
“You knew what he did?”
William replied, “I know Sarah cannot survive learning it now.”
“You are protecting Marcus.”
“I am protecting the child.”
“By making me his father?”
“By giving Daniel a father who will not hate him.”
Ethan looked toward the window.
Then he asked, “What happens if I refuse?”
William’s face became cold.
“The investigation against Carter Group will identify you as the agent who accepted bribes.”
The twelve million dollars had been transferred before Ethan consented.
My father framed him first.
Then offered him a choice.
Take legal paternity and disappear under federal pressure.
Or expose Marcus and risk destroying me while pregnant.
Ethan signed.
Not because he abandoned us.
Because he believed accepting the lie protected Daniel.
The recording ended.
Elaine covered her face.
“I didn’t know.”
I believed her.
But belief did not comfort either of us.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
I had thought Jonathan took him upstairs.
He had heard enough to understand one thing.
“Uncle Marcus is my dad?”
I moved toward him.
“Daniel…”
He stepped back.
“He doesn’t like me.”
My heart broke.
“No, sweetheart. This is not about anything wrong with you.”
“He called me a dog.”
I knelt.
“Marcus’s cruelty belongs to him. It says nothing about you.”
“Did he know?”
I could not lie.
“Yes.”
Daniel began crying silently.
Not loudly.
That was worse.
I pulled him against me.
Elaine left the room.
Her marriage had collapsed beside mine.
Jonathan received a call from Carter security.
Marcus had contacted the board.
He offered to return Ethan in exchange for the wallet chip and complete control of Daniel’s custodial account.
He had not taken Ethan to save him.
He had kidnapped the man who knew the truth.
Marcus chose the location for the exchange.
The abandoned Carter leather factory.
