Chapter 11 - Elaine’s Choice

I stared at the live video.
Daniel sat in the back seat clutching his paper plate from the barbecue.
He had carried it with him.
Maybe because children hold onto objects when adults make the world feel unsafe.
Elaine sat in front, pale and shaking.
The gun rested against her leg.
“Where are they?” I asked.
“Close enough.”
“You won’t hurt him.”
Marcus smiled without warmth.
“You thought I wouldn’t take his food.”
“You wanted a reaction. Killing him gives you nothing.”
“No. But fear makes children cooperative.”
Ethan struggled against the ropes.
“You touch that boy and the account disappears.”
Marcus turned.
“What?”
Ethan looked at me.
“William added a distress lock. If Daniel is threatened while opening the wallet, the funds transfer automatically.”
“To whom?” Marcus asked.
“Victim restitution.”
My father had built one decent protection inside a mountain of control.
Marcus did not believe him.
He called Elaine.
“Put Daniel on.”
She looked into the camera.
Her eyes met mine through the screen.
“I’m sorry, Sarah.”
Then she lifted the gun.
Marcus smiled.
Elaine pointed it at the phone.
She fired.
The video vanished.
Marcus shouted.
A second later, police lights appeared through the broken factory windows.
Elaine had destroyed the tracking jammer and transmitted their location.
Marcus grabbed the wallet.
I moved toward Ethan.
Marcus fired into the ceiling.
“Stay back.”
The old wallet activated in his hand.
A red light scanned his fingerprint.
ACCESS DENIED.
He threw it at me.
“Open it.”
“No.”
He pointed the gun toward Ethan.
“Open it or he dies.”
Ethan looked into my eyes.
“Don’t.”
Marcus pressed the barrel against his temple.
“Say the motto.”
I picked up the wallet.
The leather felt warm.
My father’s voice emerged.
“Sarah Carter recognized.”
A second light scanned my face.
“Secondary heir required.”
Daniel’s voice came through a hidden speaker.
“Mom?”
The wallet had established a secure connection to him automatically.
I heard police around his car.
He was safe.
“Daniel,” I said, “listen to me.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“Make him say it.”
Daniel began crying.
“Is Uncle Marcus there?”
“Yes.”
“Is my dad there?”
Ethan closed his eyes.
I answered carefully.
“Ethan is here.”
Marcus shouted, “Say the family motto.”
Daniel went silent.
Then he asked, “The one Grandpa used to say?”
“Yes,” Marcus said.
Daniel’s voice trembled.
“Family builds what money cannot buy.”
The wallet opened.
Marcus smiled.
Then my father’s recorded voice said:
“Distress confirmed.”
Marcus’s smile vanished.
“Founder’s account transferred.”
“To where?” he demanded.
The answer appeared on the small screen.
CARTER VICTIM RESTITUTION TRUST.
Balance: $1.26 billion.
Marcus raised the gun toward me.
Ethan broke one hand free from the rope and struck him from behind.

The gun fired.
Ethan fell.
