Chapter 15 - The Lie Ethan Kept for Seven Years

Ethan admitted the truth from his hospital bed.
William showed him both babies after the delivery.
“He told me Marcus wanted them gone.”
“So you signed papers.”
“To protect them.”
“One set named you Daniel’s father.”
“Yes.”
“And the other allowed Helen to adopt Noah.”
“Yes.”
“You helped separate my sons.”
His eyes filled.
“I believed it was temporary.”
“You all believed your intentions mattered more than my consent.”
“I know.”
“No, Ethan. You don’t.”
I paced the hospital room.
“I woke after giving birth and was told one baby had died.”
His face collapsed.
That was the lie used against me.
A nurse said the second heartbeat had been a monitoring error.
I grieved a child nobody admitted existed.
Ethan had known.
“William threatened to expose Marcus if I refused,” he said.
“That would have been good.”
“He said Marcus would claim you seduced him and destroy you publicly.”
“So you protected me by helping steal my baby.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
There was no clean hero in this story.
Ethan had sacrificed himself.
He had loved Daniel from a distance.
He had also participated in Noah’s disappearance.
Both truths existed.
“Did you ever try to find Noah?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me after William died?”
“Evelyn controlled his location. She threatened both boys.”
I looked through the hospital window.
Daniel and Noah sat together in the family waiting room.
At first they had stared.
Then Daniel offered Noah half a bag of chips.
Noah accepted.
Children repaired distance more naturally than adults.
“What happens to us?” Ethan asked.
“I don’t know.”
He nodded.
That answer hurt him.
It also respected me.
For once, I would not make promises under pressure.
DNA confirmed Daniel and Noah were twins.
Both were biologically Marcus’s children.
The assault investigation strengthened.
Elaine provided a journal in which Marcus admitted drugging me at the retreat.
He described it as “one mistake that Father turned into an inheritance crisis.”
A mistake.
That was how men reduced violence when consequences arrived.
Federal prosecutors added charges.
Marcus requested a meeting with me.
I almost refused.
Then his lawyer said he would reveal the full inner board in exchange for speaking privately.
I agreed under supervision.
Marcus entered the interview room in prison clothes.
He looked at me for a long time.
“You found Noah.”
“Yes.”
“Mother will take him back.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand her.”
“I understand enough.”
He leaned forward.
“Evelyn ordered the barbecue.”
I stared at him.
“She told me to provoke you in front of witnesses.”
“You chose the words.”
“Yes.”
“You chose to take food from Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she promised me Noah if I discredited you.”
Even imprisoned, Marcus viewed children as assets.
“You never wanted either boy.”
“I wanted the heir.”
“That is not fatherhood.”
He smiled bitterly.
“Neither of us learned family from healthy people.”
Then he gave me the names of the inner board.
May you like
At the bottom was someone who had stood beside me through every crisis.
Jonathan Reed.
