Chapter 12 - The Father Daniel Chose

Police stormed the factory.

Marcus was taken down beside the old cutting machines.

I ran to Ethan.

Blood spread across his shirt near the shoulder.

He was alive.

Barely.

Paramedics loaded him into an ambulance.

Daniel and Elaine arrived with police minutes later.

My son ran toward me.

I held him tightly.

He looked past me toward the ambulance.

“Is Ethan my dad?”

I did not know how to answer a question filled with biology, sacrifice, deception, and love.

Ethan had accepted legal paternity before Daniel’s birth.

He had tried to protect us.

Marcus provided DNA.

But fatherhood was larger than either fact.

“He loves you,” I said.

“Did he know me?”

“He knew everything he could learn.”

Michael Reeves gave Daniel a small box Ethan had carried through witness protection.

Inside were seven birthday cards.

One for every year.

None had been delivered.

Daniel opened the first.

To my son, Daniel.

You may never know my name, but I hope you always know you were wanted.

My son pressed the card against his chest.

Marcus was charged with kidnapping, assault, fraud, attempted murder, custodial forgery, and conspiracy.

Police also opened an investigation into what happened to me at the company retreat.

Hospital records confirmed I had been given a sedative.

Security footage from that night had been erased under Marcus’s authorization.

Dr. Leonard Price had signed the medical report.

A warrant was issued for his arrest.

Elaine filed for divorce.

She agreed to testify.

The board removed Marcus permanently.

But the directors did not automatically support me.

Three names from the wallet chip belonged to sitting board members.

They argued the founder’s account transfer was illegal.

They wanted the money returned to Carter Group.

I sat beside Ethan’s hospital bed while they held an emergency meeting downstairs.

He opened his eyes after surgery.

“Sarah.”

I leaned closer.

“You’re safe.”

“Daniel?”

“Safe.”

His eyes filled.

“Does he know?”

“Yes.”

“I wanted to tell you.”

“I know.”

“That night at the retreat…”

“You knew?”

“Not until William showed me the DNA test.”

“Why didn’t you expose Marcus?”

“William threatened to make you look complicit in the federal case. You were pregnant. I thought I could leave, clear my name, then come back.”

“You never came back.”

“I tried.”

I held up the train-station photograph.

He looked at it.

“Your father’s men took me before I reached the platform.”

“Where?”

“Private detention. Then witness protection.”

He closed his eyes from pain.

“I should have fought harder.”

“You survived.”

“That was not enough.”

“For Daniel, it was.”

He looked at me.

“The board will come after you.”

“They already are.”

“Then find Leonard Price.”

“Why?”

“He knows William’s final secret.”

“What secret?”

May you like

Ethan’s voice weakened.

“Daniel was not the only baby born that night.”
