Chapter 10 - Vivian Turns on Graham

Vivian entered the interview room without silver gowns.
No diamonds.
No audience.
Just county-issued clothing and a face stripped of arrogance.
Rachel sat across from her.
Claire watched through glass from another room.
Ethan stood beside her.
Vivian spoke first.
“My father will kill me.”
Rachel didn’t react.
“Why?”
“Because I failed.”
“You kidnapped Claire.”
“I kept her alive.”
Claire’s jaw tightened.
Ethan squeezed her hand.
Vivian continued.
“My father wanted her gone after the clinic.”
Rachel leaned forward.
“And you stopped him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vivian’s eyes lowered.
“Because Lily needed a mother.”
Claire almost laughed from disbelief.
Vivian corrected herself.
“Not Claire.”
Silence.
“Me.”
There it was.
The truth.
Vivian had imagined replacing Claire.
Not temporarily.
Completely.
She believed Ethan would eventually accept that Claire had abandoned them.
She believed Lily would forget.
She believed Vivian could slide into the empty place.
Rachel asked:
“Did Ethan know?”
Vivian’s eyes flashed.
“No.”
“Did he ever encourage you romantically?”
“No.”
“Did he ever promise you a future?”
“No.”
Each answer destroyed another fantasy.
Vivian looked smaller.
“I thought after enough time…”
Rachel finished:
“He would choose you.”
Vivian didn’t answer.
Claire stared through the glass.
For months she had wondered whether Ethan secretly loved Vivian.
Whether she had missed something.
Now she understood.
There had never been an affair.
Only Vivian’s obsession.
Rachel continued.
“Where will Graham go?”
Vivian named a marina in Rhode Island.
Private boat.
False registration.
A captain he had used before.
“He leaves the country by water when airports get dangerous.”
“When?”
“Soon.”
Federal agents mobilized.
Vivian then gave them a code phrase.
Without it, Graham would suspect a trap.
She agreed to call him.
The room recording began.
Graham answered after one ring.
“You disappointed me.”
Vivian’s face tightened.
“Dad—”
“You let Claire live.”
“You told me we needed the drive.”
“We needed silence.”
Vivian swallowed.
“I can get the drive.”
A pause.
“How?”
“Ethan moved it.”
Another pause.
“Where?”
Vivian gave the false location.
Graham hesitated.
Then said:
“Bring it to Newport.”
Rachel wrote the location.
Vivian asked:
“And then?”
Graham’s answer destroyed her.
“Then disappear.”
Her eyes filled.
“Together?”
Silence.
“No.”
Vivian went pale.
“What do you mean?”
“You made yourself a liability.”
Her father hung up.
Vivian stared at the phone.
For years, she had committed crimes to preserve Graham’s approval.
Kidnapped her friend.
Drugged her.
Terrorized a child.
Stole millions.
And when she became inconvenient, Graham discarded her with one sentence.
Claire watched Vivian cry.
She felt no satisfaction.
Only emptiness.
Ethan whispered:
“Do you feel sorry for her?”
Claire thought about it.
“No.”
Then she added:
“But I understand how she became this.”
That was different.
Federal agents reached the marina before Graham.
They waited.
At 3:42 a.m., a black sedan arrived.
Graham stepped out.
Older than the photographs.
White hair.
Tall.
Calm.
Alive.
He approached the dock carrying a pistol.
Agents moved.
“FEDERAL AGENTS!”
Graham turned.
Raised the weapon.
Gunfire erupted.
Ethan waited miles away with Claire and Lily.
Then Rachel called.
“He’s alive.”
Claire exhaled.
“In custody?”
“Yes.”
For the first time, Claire’s entire body relaxed.
Graham Hale had spent six years being officially dead.
Now he was very publicly alive.
Handcuffed.
Photographed.
Unable to vanish behind another shell company.
But the arrests were only beginning.
The black drive contained enough evidence to implicate more than twenty people.
And one name shocked Ethan most.

A senior detective who had helped investigate Claire’s disappearance.
The same detective who had concluded she left voluntarily.
