Chapter 8 - The Passport

Ethan ran upstairs to Lily’s room.
The passport drawer was empty.
His own passport remained.
Lily’s was gone.
Marcus checked security footage.
At 7:12 p.m., during the party, a catering van entered the service drive.
At 7:28, a man wearing a catering uniform entered the east wing.
At 7:34, he left carrying a black pouch.
Nobody noticed.
Everyone was watching Vivian’s spectacle downstairs.
Rachel arrived minutes later.
“The man is tied to Graham.”
“Where is he?”
“We’re tracking the van.”
Ethan held Lily tighter.
She had been rescued from the ice.
But Graham had nearly stolen the document needed to take her overseas.
“Why freeze her?”
Rachel frowned.
“To incapacitate her?”
Ethan shook his head.
“No. Vivian wanted me to see it.”
“She invited you?”
“I was supposed to arrive late.”
The party had been scheduled during Ethan’s return from Chicago.
Vivian knew his flight time.
She expected him to enter dramatically.
Vivian had staged the ice display.
Why?
Because she wanted chaos.
Police.
Ambulances.
Guests filming.
Everyone focused on the ballroom.
While Graham’s man stole Lily’s passport.
“What were they planning next?” Ethan asked.
Rachel looked grim.
“If Vivian could regain access to Lily later, Graham could move her.”
“Why Lily?”
The answer came from Claire’s files.
Graham had created a trust years earlier using future descendants as beneficiaries.
It was designed to hide assets.
Lily’s identity had been inserted into offshore accounts.
Not because she owned the money.
Because her existence provided legal cover.
If Graham controlled Lily’s passport and identity documents, he could move funds while claiming to act for trusts benefiting her.
Claire discovered that too.
Ethan felt physically sick.
“They were using my daughter as a financial instrument.”
Rachel nodded.
Vivian’s obsession had emotional roots.
But Graham’s interest was colder.
Lily was useful.
And that made him more dangerous.
At 3:20 a.m., police found the catering van abandoned.
The passport was gone.
But the driver’s phone remained.
One deleted text was recovered:
AIRFIELD READY 0400. GIRL AFTER MOTHER.
Ethan stared.
“Girl after mother.”
Rachel’s expression sharpened.
“They planned to move Claire first.”
Then Lily.
The secluded Vermont property became an emergency operation.
Agents approached before dawn.
Ethan waited in a command vehicle miles away.
At 5:07, gunfire was reported.
His heart stopped.
At 5:11, Rachel called.
“We have Claire.”
Ethan couldn’t speak.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
He started crying.
“Is she hurt?”
“She’s weak. Dehydrated. But alive.”
“And Graham?”
“Gone.”
Ethan’s joy collided with fear.
“Gone where?”
“He left before agents arrived.”
“How?”
“Service road.”
“Claire said he had Lily’s passport.”
“We know.”
Ethan looked down at his daughter sleeping against him.
Graham had failed to take her.
But he was still free.
Then another agent entered.
“We found something in the Vermont house.”
A child-sized coat.
A booster seat.
Toddler medication.
New clothing in Lily’s size.
They hadn’t been planning a hypothetical kidnapping.
They had prepared for Lily’s arrival.
Claire had been kept alive until the transfer.
Then likely discarded.
And Lily would have vanished under a new identity.
Ethan stared at the clothing.
His fear turned to rage.
But Claire was alive.
That mattered more.
At the hospital, Ethan finally saw her.
She looked smaller.
Her hair had been cut unevenly.
Bruises marked one wrist.
But when she saw Lily—
she broke.
“My baby.”
Lily stared.
Then her face crumpled.
“Mommy!”
Ethan placed her carefully on the bed.
Claire wrapped both arms around her.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Ethan stood beside them crying openly.
Claire reached for him.
He took her hand.
“I thought you left.”
“I know.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
Her grip tightened.
“You didn’t know.”
“I should have.”
Claire looked directly at him.
“Then know now.”
Ethan swallowed.
“What?”
“Graham won’t run.”
“Why not?”
“Because he still needs the drive.”
Rachel entered.
“We have it.”
Claire shook her head.
“That’s not the one he wants.”
Everyone went silent.
Claire looked at Ethan.
“The drive in the lighthouse is evidence.”
She took a breath.
“But there’s another one.”
“Where?”
Claire looked toward Lily.
May you like
Then back at Ethan.
“Inside Vivian’s house.”
