Chapter 6 - Claire’s Hidden Warning

Ethan watched the video alone first.
Then again with Rachel.
Claire sat in the nursery.
Lily’s crib was still empty behind her.
“If you’re watching this, things got worse.”
Her voice was steady.
Not panicked.
“I’ve spent six months reviewing the foundation.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
She had carried this alone.
“Vivian has taken at least two-point-three million dollars.”
Rachel wrote notes.
Claire continued.
“But money isn’t what scares me.”
She lifted a folder.
“I found emails between Vivian and Malcolm Pierce discussing how to have someone declared mentally incompetent.”
Ethan looked at Rachel.
Claire’s voice tightened.
“They were researching guardianship.”
“Whose?” Ethan whispered.
Then Claire answered.
“Mine.”
Ethan went cold.
Vivian wasn’t just planning to silence Claire.
She had been planning to discredit her legally.
Claire continued:
“If I’m declared unstable, Vivian believes she can pressure Ethan into letting her control the foundation temporarily.”
Rachel paused the video.
“That’s financial motive.”
Ethan shook his head.
“Not enough.”
Rachel looked at him.
“What?”
“Vivian already controlled operations.”
He was right.
She could steal money through shell companies without taking Claire’s legal identity.
Why go further?
The video continued.
Claire held up another document.
A draft amendment.
“If anything happens to me, Vivian is not to have unsupervised access to Lily.”
Ethan’s throat closed.
“Claire…”
“I know that sounds extreme.”
She took a breath.
“But Vivian has become obsessed with the idea that Lily should have been hers.”
Ethan froze.
Rachel slowly looked at him.
Claire continued.
“She says things like, ‘I would have made a better mother.’ At first I thought she was joking.”
Then Claire’s expression changed.
“She wasn’t.”
Ethan remembered Vivian buying Lily matching dresses.
Calling her “my girl.”
Correcting Claire’s feeding choices.
Telling relatives Lily looked more like a Hale than a Carter.
It had all seemed irritating.
Now it looked sinister.
Claire continued:
“Vivian lost a pregnancy years ago. I’m not saying grief made her dangerous. Grief does not excuse any of this.”
Ethan appreciated that.
“But I think she started treating my pregnancy as if it belonged to her.”
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“If she ever tries to convince you I’m unstable, remember this video.”
Then the final line.
“And if she ever gets me out of the way, don’t let her raise Lily.”
The video ended.
Ethan broke.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
His shoulders folded.
His hands covered his face.
Claire had warned him.
And Vivian had succeeded anyway.
Rachel gave him a minute.
Then she said:
“This also explains the ice.”
Ethan looked up.
“What?”
“Vivian doesn’t see Lily as a child with autonomy.”
Rachel gestured toward the frozen-display photographs.
“She sees her as something to possess. Display. Control.”
Ethan felt sick.
That night, prosecutors added more charges.
Claire’s warning destroyed Vivian’s claim that she had acted because Claire was unstable.
Then Malcolm Pierce was arrested.
He lasted two days before asking for a deal.
He admitted sedating Claire.
Admitted falsifying psychiatric records.
Admitted confining her under a false name.
But he insisted he did not know where Claire was now.
“Vivian took her,” he said.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“You let her leave with a kidnapped woman?”
“I was scared.”
Rachel stared at him.
“Of Vivian?”
Malcolm shook his head.
“Of the man working with her.”
The gray-jacketed man from the basement.
The same man who transported Claire.
“Who was he?”
Malcolm whispered:
“Graham Hale.”
Vivian’s father.
Ethan knew Graham Hale too.
Retired judge.
Influential.
Respected.
And supposedly dead.
He had been reported killed in a private-plane crash six years earlier.
Rachel stared at Malcolm.
“Graham Hale is dead.”
Malcolm’s face drained.
“No.”
May you like
Then he whispered:
“That’s what he wanted everyone to believe.”
