Chapter 9 - Vivian’s House

Vivian owned a townhouse downtown.

Police had searched it after her arrest.

They found nothing important.

Claire knew why.

“She had a false wall behind the wine cabinet.”

Rachel looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Vivian showed me years ago.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“She used to brag that her father taught her never to trust banks.”

The team returned with a warrant.

Behind the wine cabinet they found a steel compartment.

Cash.

Passports.

Jewelry.

Two handguns.

And a small black drive.

Rachel called Claire from the scene.

“Is this it?”

Claire asked for the serial number.

Then closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“What’s on it?”

Claire looked at Ethan.

“The list.”

“What list?”

“Everyone Graham paid.”

Not just bank records.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Judges.

Police officers.

Attorneys.

Developers.

People still in office.

People capable of helping Graham disappear.

Now Ethan understood why Graham would not simply flee.

That drive could destroy every protection he had left.

If authorities possessed it, his network collapsed.

If he recovered it, he still had leverage.

Rachel immediately moved the drive to federal custody.

But there was a problem.

Someone inside the investigation leaked the search.

Within twenty minutes, Vivian’s attorney knew they found something.

Rachel became furious.

“Graham still has contacts.”

Claire whispered:

“That’s why he always wins.”

Ethan sat beside her hospital bed.

“Not this time.”

Claire looked at him.

“You don’t know him.”

“No.”

Ethan looked at Lily asleep nearby.

“But I know what he wants.”

Claire’s eyes sharpened.

The drive.

Rachel built a plan.

A controlled leak.

They would make it appear the drive remained at the Carter mansion overnight before transfer to federal custody.

It was risky.

Ethan objected immediately.

“You want him to come here?”

“No. We want him to believe he can.”

“Lily is here.”

“She won’t be.”

Claire touched Ethan’s arm.

“Do it.”

He stared at her.

“You just got back.”

“And I want this finished.”

They moved Lily and Claire to a secure location.

Ethan insisted on remaining at the mansion.

Rachel refused.

He insisted again.

Claire finally said:

“You are not proving anything by putting yourself in danger.”

Ethan looked at her.

She continued.

“Protecting us doesn’t mean being the one holding the weapon.”

That silenced him.

He went with them.

At 1:17 a.m., a vehicle approached the mansion.

One man entered through the service entrance.

Another cut power to the east wing.

A third waited near the road.

Agents moved.

Two men surrendered.

The third ran.

Not Graham.

But one carried a phone.

Recent message:

HOLD UNTIL I CONFIRM CARTER HAS LEFT.

Graham had been watching Ethan personally.

Rachel traced the signal.

A hill across from the secure compound where Claire and Lily had been moved.

Ethan felt his stomach drop.

“He followed us.”

Agents rushed outside.

A black SUV tore away.

The chase lasted twenty minutes.

Then Graham abandoned the vehicle near the river.

Again, he disappeared.

But this time he left something behind.

A burner phone.

On it was a photograph taken through a long-range lens.

Claire.

Ethan.

Lily.

Together.

Below it, Graham had typed one message to Vivian.

SHE SHOULD HAVE STAYED QUIET.

Vivian received the message in jail.

And for the first time since her arrest, she asked to speak to prosecutors without her attorney present.

She was terrified.

Not for herself.

For Graham.

Or perhaps of him.

“She knows where he’ll go,” Claire said.

Rachel nodded.

Vivian finally made an offer.

Full cooperation.

Every safe house.

Every account.

Every name.

In exchange, she wanted one thing.

Protection from her father.
