Chapter 1 - Nobody Will Believe You

“Stop pretending you’re the victim. Nobody here will believe you.”
Tyler stood over me with one fist still clenched.
I sat on the hardwood floor beneath the chandelier, pressing my palm against my temple. Blood slipped between my fingers and landed beside the broken wineglass near my knee.
My father did not move.
Robert Hale remained seated at the head of the dining table, his expensive gray suit perfectly straight, his expression colder than the Colorado lake visible through the dark windows behind him.
My mother, Jennifer, folded her cloth napkin.
She did not even look at the blood.
Tyler leaned closer.
“You always ruin everything, Olivia.”
My head throbbed, but my thoughts were suddenly clear.
This had never been a family dinner.
The legal folder beside my father’s plate proved that.
So did the pen they had placed in front of my empty chair.
They had invited me home to force me to sign away the lake house, my grandfather’s trust, and the voting shares he had left in my name.
When I refused, Tyler grabbed my phone.
When I reached for it, he shoved me.
My temple struck the edge of the sideboard.
No one helped me.
That was the moment I stopped hoping one of them still loved me.
I slowly reached toward the phone lying beside the broken glass.
Tyler laughed.
“Calling the police?”
“No.”
I pressed play.
My father’s voice filled the dining room.
“Tonight, she signs everything over.”
Every face changed.
Tyler’s smile vanished.
My mother turned toward the small black camera mounted above the wine cabinet.
My father stood so quickly that his chair scraped backward.
“Where did you get that recording?”
I pushed myself to my feet.
My knees shook, but my voice did not.
“You should have checked what was recording before you betrayed me.”
The camera’s tiny red light blinked.
My father stepped toward me.
“Turn that off.”
I lifted my phone higher.
“You mean the camera?”
His confidence cracked.
“Olivia, give me the phone.”
“No.”
Tyler moved to block the doorway.
My mother finally spoke.
“You’re confused. You hit your head.”
I looked at all three of them.
“No. I finally understand.”
The recording continued.
Jennifer’s voice came through next.
“If she refuses to sign, Tyler knows how to frighten her.”
Tyler went pale.
Robert lunged for the phone.
I stepped back, keeping the camera pointed directly at him.
Then another voice played from the recording.
A man none of them expected me to recognize.
My grandfather’s attorney.

And what he said next proved my family had been planning my disappearance for months.
👉 The recording had exposed their plan to steal Olivia’s inheritance, but the attorney’s next sentence revealed what they intended to do after she signed.
