Chapter 10 - The Boathouse Fight

Snow covered the path to the lake.

Daniel and two officers moved ahead of me, but the boathouse door was already open.

A light swung inside.

Tyler stood beside Grandpa’s old fishing boat with a metal drive in his hand.

“Don’t move,” an officer ordered.

Tyler grabbed a flare gun from the emergency cabinet.

He pointed it toward a pool of gasoline spreading across the floor.

“Back up.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

“You fire that, everyone in here burns.”

Tyler laughed.

“Then tell Olivia to stop.”

I stepped forward.

“Give me the drive.”

“You already took everything.”

“I didn’t take Mom and Dad from you.”

“Yes, you did.”

“They chose this.”

“They chose you first.”

His voice broke.

For the first time, I saw the frightened child beneath the violent man.

It did not erase what he had done.

“Grandpa loved you,” I said.

“He gave me cash.”

“He gave you chances.”

“He gave you less.”

“Because you kept hurting people.”

Tyler’s eyes filled with rage again.

He lifted the flare gun.

“You always talk like him.”

“And you always blame someone else.”

He fired.

Daniel pulled me behind the boat.

The flare hit the wall instead of the gasoline.

Officers rushed Tyler.

He swung the metal drive like a weapon and struck one officer before Daniel tackled him.

The flare ignited old rope.

Smoke spread quickly.

I crawled toward the drive.

Tyler kicked it across the floor.

It slid beneath the boat.

Flames climbed the wall.

Daniel dragged Tyler outside while another officer used an extinguisher.

I reached beneath the hull and grabbed the drive seconds before burning debris fell.

Outside, Tyler screamed at me.

“You think that makes you innocent?”

“No,” I said. “It makes you caught.”

The drive was partially damaged.

A forensic laboratory recovered one video file.

The footage began at 8:14 p.m. on the night Grandpa died.

Grandpa stood in the upstairs hallway holding the banister.

Robert faced him.

There was no audio, but their argument was obvious.

Grandpa tried to move past him.

Robert blocked the stairs.

Then Robert reached into his pocket and showed him something.

Grandpa froze.

The object looked like a phone.

Robert pressed play.

Whatever appeared on the screen devastated Grandpa.

He grabbed his chest.

Robert stepped closer.

Then he pushed him.

Grandpa fell backward down the staircase.

Jennifer entered moments later.

She stared at the body.

Robert took her face between his hands and spoke to her.

Then he pointed toward the front door.

She left.

The murder was clear.

But the phone remained a mystery.

What had Robert shown Grandpa before killing him?

The answer came from another recovered file.

A photograph of me at age sixteen, unconscious in a hospital bed.

Next to it was a medical report I had never seen.

Pregnancy test: positive.
