Chapter 15 - My Mother Finally Spoke

Jennifer accepted a plea agreement.

In exchange for a reduced sentence, she testified against Robert, Martin, Dr. Shaw, Senator Grant, and every executive involved in the cover-up.

Her testimony lasted three days.

She admitted helping falsify my medical consent forms.

She admitted lying about Grandpa’s death.

She admitted watching Tyler attack me and doing nothing.

She did not ask the court to excuse her.

That mattered.

But it did not erase anything.

During a break, she saw me in the courthouse hallway.

“I’m sorry” were the first words she said.

I looked at her.

“For which part?”

“All of it.”

“That’s too much for one apology.”

“I know.”

She gave me a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of me and Grandpa at the lake when I was ten.

On the back, she had written:

He was the only person brave enough to love you without asking you to become smaller.

“I used to resent him for that,” Jennifer said.

“Why?”

“Because you trusted him more than me.”

“He protected me.”

“I know.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I kept choosing the person most likely to punish me instead of the child who needed me.”

I did not comfort her.

Some truths arrive too late for comfort.

“What happens now?” she asked.

“You tell the truth.”

“And us?”

“There is no us right now.”

She nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

Robert’s trial drew national attention.

The prosecution presented the staircase video, Grandpa’s letter, the blue ledger, Mercer’s testimony, Martin’s records, and the party recording.

Robert insisted everything had been manipulated by a bitter daughter.

Then I took the stand.

His attorney asked whether I hated my father.

“I hate what he did.”

“That was not my question.”

“No. I don’t hate him.”

Robert looked surprised.

“I spent too many years carrying things he put inside me. I’m not carrying hatred for him too.”

The courtroom became silent.

The jury convicted Robert of murder, kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and unlawful imprisonment.

Martin Crowe received twenty-four years.

Dr. Shaw received eighteen years and lost his license.

Detective Mercer received twelve years.

Senator Grant resigned before being indicted on conspiracy and obstruction charges.

Thomas Reed pleaded guilty and testified against others.

Tyler faced charges for assault, arson, witness intimidation, unlawful restraint, and attempted murder.

Before his trial, he requested to speak with me.

Claire asked whether I was ready.

“No,” I said.

Then I thought about the brother Robert had created and the child Tyler had once been.

“But I need to hear what he says.”

Tyler entered the visitation room wearing an orange uniform.

He did not look arrogant anymore.

He looked exhausted.

“I remember the night of the party,” he said.

My stomach tightened.

“I saw Mason put something in your drink.”

I stared at him.

“You knew?”

He nodded.

“And I didn’t stop him.”

👉 Tyler’s confession revealed that he could have prevented Olivia’s assault years earlier, forcing her to decide whether the truth deserved mercy.
