Chapter 8 - The Brother Who Wanted Me Afraid

Tyler called from a blocked number.

Claire recorded everything.

“You made this happen,” he said.

“You attacked me.”

“You embarrassed Dad.”

“You tried to have a witness shot.”

“It was supposed to scare her.”

“You don’t get credit because your crime failed.”

His breathing grew heavier.

“You always thought you were better than me.”

“No. Grandpa trusted me because I didn’t hurt people when I was angry.”

“You stole what belonged to me.”

“The trust was never yours.”

“Because you manipulated an old man.”

I almost felt sorry for him.

Robert and Jennifer had raised Tyler to believe every consequence was someone else’s fault.

“What do you want?”

“Sign the shares over to Dad.”

“No.”

“Then I start sending videos.”

“What videos?”

He laughed.

“You’ll see.”

An hour later, a video appeared online.

It showed me screaming inside Pine Ridge Behavioral Center.

The clip had been edited to remove the nurse restraining me and the moments when I asked for legal counsel.

The caption called me unstable and violent.

Anonymous accounts spread it across social media.

Hale Development’s board announced an emergency meeting.

Robert claimed the scandal made me unfit to exercise voting authority.

Claire reminded them that edited hospital footage had been obtained illegally.

Several board members did not care.

They cared about stock prices.

For the first time, I understood why Grandpa had protected the shares inside a trust.

The company was full of people who called cowardice “stability.”

At the board meeting, Robert sat across from me with Jennifer beside him.

Martin Crowe participated remotely.

Tyler remained missing.

Robert spoke first.

“My daughter needs treatment, not corporate responsibility.”

I placed the full hidden-camera recording on the table.

“You mean the treatment you arranged after drugging me?”

The room became silent.

Claire distributed toxicology results, server logs, and Dr. Shaw’s payment records.

Robert’s allies shifted uncomfortably.

Then I played the unedited facility video.

It showed me asking for a lawyer while staff held me down under Dr. Shaw’s orders.

The edited version collapsed immediately.

Martin disconnected from the meeting.

That made him look guilty.

The board postponed the vote.

Robert cornered me outside.

“You think this is a victory?”

“I think you’re scared.”

His eyes turned cold.

“You have no idea what fear is.”

“I sat bleeding while my family watched.”

“You survived.”

“That seems to disappoint you.”

He walked away.

That night, Daniel traced Tyler’s phone to a hunting cabin owned by Jennifer’s brother.

Police surrounded it.

The cabin was empty.

Inside, they found weapons, burner phones, and printed photographs of me, Claire, Ruth, and Melissa.

One photograph showed Grandpa lying at the bottom of the staircase.

It had been taken before the official 911 call.

On the back, Tyler had written:

Dad said never show Mom.

Jennifer had known less than I thought.

Or Robert had feared what she would do if she learned the truth.

Then police found a second photograph.

Jennifer stood at the top of the stairs.

She was looking down at Grandpa’s body.

👉 The photograph proved Jennifer was inside the lake house before Robert called for help, making her either a witness—or part of the murder.
