Chapter 11 - The Year They Took From Me

I was sixteen when I spent three weeks in a private clinic after what my parents called a nervous breakdown.
I remembered fragments.
A party at Tyler’s friend’s house.
A drink that tasted strange.
Waking in pain.
Jennifer telling me I had fallen down stairs.
Then weeks of medication and silence.
The recovered medical report showed I had been eight weeks pregnant.
There was also a procedure authorization.
Termination of pregnancy.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
It was forged.
I could not breathe.
Claire sat beside me as I read the pages.
“Who was the father?”
The report used an identification number instead of a name.
Daniel traced the clinic records.
The clinic had closed four years earlier after allegations of illegal patient detention and falsified consent forms.
Dr. Shaw had worked there.
The same psychiatrist who later helped my family imprison me.
Everything connected.
We found Ruth at her apartment.
When I showed her the report, she began crying.
“I thought they told you.”
“Tell me what?”
She said Grandpa learned about the pregnancy after finding clinic bills hidden in Robert’s office.
He confronted Jennifer.
Jennifer claimed I had been assaulted at the party and that ending the pregnancy protected me from scandal.
“Who assaulted me?”
Ruth hesitated.
“Tyler’s friend, Mason Reed.”
Mason was the son of Robert’s business partner.
He had died in a skiing accident two years later.
Grandpa wanted to report the assault.
Robert refused.
The Reed family held major contracts with Hale Development.
My parents protected the company.
Again.
“What did Grandpa show Dad?”
Ruth believed Grandpa had obtained a recording from the party.
A guest had filmed Mason carrying me into an upstairs room while I could barely stand.
Grandpa threatened to release it and expose everyone who covered it up.
Robert showed Grandpa the hospital photograph as a threat.
If Grandpa acted, Robert would publicly claim I had been promiscuous, unstable, and responsible.
Grandpa refused to remain silent.
So Robert killed him.
The truth shattered something inside me.
My family had not begun betraying me at twenty-two.
They had been rewriting my life since I was sixteen.
Jennifer requested to speak with me from county jail.
I almost refused.
Then Claire said she might know where the party recording was.
Jennifer looked exhausted when I entered the visitation room.
“I thought you would never remember.”
“You made sure I couldn’t.”
“The doctors said forgetting might protect you.”
“No. Forgetting protected Robert.”
She covered her face.
“I was afraid you would hurt yourself.”
“You should have been afraid of the man who hurt me.”
“I was.”
“But you protected him anyway.”
She admitted Robert kept the original party recording inside a private vault at Hale Development headquarters.
He used it to control the Reed family for years.
“Why would he keep evidence that could destroy him?”
“Because it could destroy other powerful people too.”
The recording showed more than Mason.
Several businessmen, donors, and a state senator had attended the party.
Some saw what happened.
No one intervened.
Then the jail officer entered.
Robert had posted bail on the financial charges before prosecutors formally filed the murder warrant.
He had disappeared.
The private vault at Hale Development was open.

And every file inside it was gone.
👉 Robert had escaped with evidence tying powerful men to Olivia’s assault, giving him leverage dangerous enough to keep an entire city silent.
