Chapter 14 - The Son He Created

Tyler fired first.
The bullet struck Robert’s shoulder.
My father fell against the kitchen island.
Agents shouted from the dining room.
Tyler grabbed me and pressed his gun against my neck.
“Stay back!”
Daniel appeared in the doorway.
“Let her go.”
Tyler dragged me toward the mudroom.
Robert groaned on the floor, one hand pressed against his wound.
Even injured, he looked furious rather than frightened.
“You idiot,” he hissed at Tyler. “You ruined everything.”
Tyler’s arm tightened around me.
“You were leaving without me.”
“You were always a liability.”
The words hit Tyler harder than the bullet had hit Robert.
“I did everything you asked.”
“You failed at everything I asked.”
Tyler began shaking.
I knew that look.
It was the same rage I saw before he shoved me at dinner.
But now it was mixed with grief.
My father had built Tyler’s entire identity around being the chosen son.
Then discarded him the moment he became inconvenient.
“Tyler,” I said quietly.
“Shut up.”
“He used you.”
“You think I don’t know that?”
“Then don’t become him.”
“I’m already worse.”
His voice cracked.
“No. You can still put the gun down.”
Robert laughed weakly.
“He won’t. He has never had the courage to face consequences.”
Tyler pointed the gun toward him.
Daniel took one step forward.
“Tyler, look at me.”
Tyler did not.
He stared at Robert.
“You said Grandpa deserved it.”
Robert’s face changed.
“You were there?” I whispered.
Tyler swallowed.
He admitted he returned to the house after Jennifer took him away.
He watched through the side window as Robert pushed Grandpa.
He filmed part of the aftermath because he wanted protection in case Robert blamed him.
“That’s the phone Dad showed Grandpa,” I said.
Tyler nodded.
Robert had taken Tyler’s phone after discovering the party video and used it to threaten Grandpa.
But Tyler had saved a cloud backup.
The original party recording still existed.
“Where?” I asked.
Tyler’s eyes flicked toward the phone in Robert’s hand.
Robert had downloaded it before returning to the lake house.
That was why he risked coming back.
Daniel moved again.
Tyler swung the gun toward him.
I drove my elbow into Tyler’s ribs.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Daniel tackled him.
Agents restrained Tyler while I crawled toward Robert’s phone.
Robert reached for it.
I grabbed it first.
He stared at me from the floor.
“You have no idea what that recording will do.”
“It will tell the truth.”
“It will destroy people who can destroy you.”
“They already tried.”
His eyes filled with something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Federal agents carried him out on a stretcher in handcuffs.
Tyler was taken separately.
Ruth survived with minor injuries.
The propane threat was mostly a bluff, though Robert had opened one gas line near the basement furnace.
The phone contained the video.
It showed enough to prove my assault and the deliberate cover-up.
It also captured Senator Grant ordering everyone to remain silent.
But the final minute contained another revelation.
Jennifer entered the upstairs room before I was taken to the clinic.
She slapped Mason across the face.
Then she turned toward the camera and said, “Call the police.”
Robert entered behind her.
He took the phone away.
My mother had tried to help me once.

Then she spent six years obeying the man who stopped her.
👉 The recording proved Jennifer initially fought for Olivia, but her decision afterward would determine whether she was remembered as another victim—or an accomplice.
