Chapter 10 - Walter’s Last Account

Walter had always claimed he was broke.
He wasn’t.
Investigators found a private account in the Cayman Islands.
Balance:
$3.7 million.
Most of it traced back to Eleanor’s companies.
But there was a problem.
The account required two-factor authentication.
Walter controlled the password.
Ethan controlled the authentication device.
That explained why Ethan disappeared.
He wasn’t running from Walter.
He was running toward Walter’s money.
Police believed he intended to take enough to pay his creditors and flee.
Walter was furious when confronted.
“That money is mine.”
The detective smiled without humor.
“Your wife’s accountants disagree.”
Walter refused to cooperate.
Then prosecutors showed him the porch video.
Ethan adjusting Lily’s microphone.
Walter chaining the child.
The bread.
The kick.
Every second.
Walter watched silently.
Then they showed him the text messages.
The planted pills.
The forged psychiatric report.
Daniel Reeves’s testimony.
Eleanor’s audio.
His attorney asked for a break.
For the first time, Walter looked old.
Not powerful.
Not terrifying.
Just trapped.
Meanwhile, Claire received temporary sole custody of Lily.
Ethan was prohibited from contact pending further proceedings.
Walter was ordered to stay away.
The trust remained frozen from any parental withdrawals.
For the first time since the porch, Claire slept four straight hours.
Then police called.
They had found Ethan’s car at an airport hotel.
Inside were two passports.
One belonged to Ethan.
The second was a forged passport with Lily’s photograph.
Claire stopped breathing.
“He was going to take her?”
The detective couldn’t say for certain.
But the passport changed everything.
An emergency nationwide alert was issued.
Authorities found flight searches on Ethan’s laptop.
Mexico City.
Panama City.
Cayman Islands.
Claire sat beside Lily’s crib that night.
Her daughter slept peacefully.
Claire touched her tiny hand.
“I won’t let him take you.”
The next morning, Walter requested a meeting with prosecutors.
He was suddenly willing to talk.
His reason was simple.
He had learned about the forged passport.
Even Walter hadn’t known about that.
Ethan had been planning his own escape.
And apparently—
he intended to leave Walter behind.
Walter’s loyalty disappeared instantly.
He gave investigators Ethan’s emergency contact location.
A private cabin owned through one of the shell companies.
Police surrounded it that afternoon.
But Ethan wasn’t there.
Inside they found cash.
Burner phones.
Financial documents.
And a handwritten list.
At the top:
CLAIRE — REMOVE.
LILY — TAKE.
WALTER — BLAME.
Claire stared at the photograph of the page.
May you like
Ethan had never intended to save his father.
He intended to sacrifice him.
