Chapter 12 - Claire Takes the Stand

The courtroom was silent when Claire walked to the witness stand.

Walter sat on one side.

Ethan on the other.

Separate defense teams.

Separate strategies.

Same fear.

Claire looked at neither of them.

The prosecutor began with the porch.

“What did you see when you arrived?”

“My daughter chained to a post.”

“What was she wearing?”

“A blue winter coat.”

“How cold was it?”

“Twenty-eight degrees.”

“What did Walter do with the bread?”

“He threw it toward her.”

Claire swallowed.

“Then kicked it away when she reached for it.”

A juror looked down.

The prosecutor played the video.

Nobody spoke.

Claire watched herself run into frame.

Watched herself grab Lily.

Watched Walter step forward.

Watched the slap.

The defense seized on it.

Ethan’s attorney stood.

“Mrs. Hale, you assaulted a sixty-four-year-old man, correct?”

“Yes.”

“You could have walked away.”

Claire looked directly at him.

“My baby was chained to a porch post.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I know.”

A few jurors shifted.

The attorney tried again.

“You have a temper, don’t you?”

“No.”

“You struck Walter.”

“After he chained my daughter outside, kicked food away from her, and called her a dog.”

The judge instructed her to answer only the question.

Claire nodded.

“Yes. I slapped him.”

No excuses.

No pretending.

That honesty mattered.

Then prosecutors played the hidden recording.

Ethan:

“Make it believable.”

Walter:

“If she doesn’t hit me?”

Ethan:

“Mention Lily. She’ll react.”

The courtroom went dead silent.

Claire finally looked at Ethan.

He stared at the table.

Later came the pills.

The forged doctor’s statement.

The fabricated CPS report.

The trust documents.

The offshore account.

Eleanor’s audio.

Daniel Reeves’s video.

The forged passport.

Piece after piece.

The defense could challenge one item.

Not all of them.

Then Margaret testified about Eleanor’s warning.

“My client told me she believed Walter and Ethan would attempt to manipulate Lily’s custody to access the trust.”

Ethan’s attorney objected.

Some portions were limited.

But the admissible records were enough.

Finally, Walter took a plea agreement on multiple financial and conspiracy-related charges and agreed to testify truthfully about Ethan’s role.

Ethan called him a coward.

Walter stared at his son.

“You were going to blame everything on me.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You taught me how.”

Even the judge paused.

Claire felt no satisfaction watching them destroy each other.

Only relief that Lily wasn’t there to see it.

Then the prosecution displayed one final photograph.

Lily’s forged passport.

And Ethan’s defense began to collapse.
