Chapter 8 - The Person Who Sent the Video

The phone belonged to Daniel Reeves.

Walter’s longtime driver.

Claire barely knew him.

He had worked for the family for twelve years.

When police contacted him, Daniel agreed to meet immediately.

“I should’ve come forward sooner.”

Claire sat across from him.

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because Walter paid my wife’s medical insurance.”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“She has cancer.”

Claire’s anger softened, but only slightly.

“What did you see?”

“Everything.”

He had driven Walter to the house that afternoon.

Ethan was already there.

Daniel remained in the driveway.

At first he assumed they were discussing family business.

Then he heard Lily crying.

He walked around the side.

Saw the chain.

Saw Ethan installing a hidden porch camera.

Daniel secretly filmed several seconds with an old work phone.

“Why send it now?”

“Because I saw what Walter did with the bread.”

His voice broke.

“I have grandchildren.”

Daniel also revealed something else.

Two weeks earlier, Walter had ordered him to deliver a locked briefcase to a private investigator named Chase Morgan.

The address was on Daniel’s GPS history.

Police obtained a warrant.

Inside Chase’s office, investigators found hundreds of photographs of Claire.

Grocery stores.

Parks.

Doctor appointments.

Even Lily’s daycare.

There were notes.

CLAIRE ARGUES WITH CASHIER.

CLAIRE BUYS WINE.

CLAIRE LEAVES CHILD WITH SITTER.

Normal moments had been rewritten to sound sinister.

A glass of wine became “possible alcohol dependency.”

A disagreement over a double charge became “public aggression.”

Leaving Lily with Megan for ninety minutes became “frequent abandonment.”

Claire read through the reports.

“They built a fake version of me.”

Margaret nodded.

“For court.”

Police also recovered invoices.

Ethan had paid Chase through one of the companies involved in Eleanor’s missing money.

The conspiracy was no longer just Walter’s word against Claire’s.

It was documented.

But the most important discovery was hidden in a folder labeled CUSTODY.

Inside was a draft petition.

Ethan intended to seek emergency sole custody.

The filing date was scheduled for the morning after the porch incident.

Attached as planned exhibits:

Photographs of pills in Claire’s car.

Witness statements from Walter.

The confrontation video.

A psychiatric declaration.

Claire stopped.

“What psychiatric declaration?”

Margaret read it.

It claimed Claire suffered from severe postpartum psychosis.

Claire’s face hardened.

“I never had postpartum psychosis.”

The doctor’s signature belonged to someone Claire had never met.

Police contacted the physician.

He had never written the declaration.

His signature had been forged.

Then investigators checked the file metadata.

The document had been created on Ethan’s home computer.

Claire whispered:

“He was going to take my daughter the next morning.”

Margaret nodded.

“And once he obtained emergency custody…”

Claire finished the sentence.

“He would petition for access to Lily’s trust.”

Exactly.

But one question remained.

Why had Ethan become willing to destroy his wife and traumatize his daughter for money?

The answer arrived from Eleanor’s forensic accountant.

Ethan wasn’t merely greedy.

He was desperate.
