Chapter 9 - Ethan’s Hidden Debt

Ethan owed nearly five million dollars.

Claire stared at the numbers.

“Five million?”

The forensic accountant nodded.

Sports betting.

Private loans.

High-risk investments.

Then borrowing to cover previous borrowing.

He had hidden everything through shell companies.

Walter knew.

Instead of stopping him, Walter helped.

Because Ethan’s financial crimes gave Walter leverage.

Claire finally understood their relationship.

Walter controlled Ethan with money.

Ethan helped Walter steal from Eleanor.

Then Lily’s trust became their escape route.

Eight-point-four million dollars.

Enough to solve Ethan’s debt.

Enough to replace Walter’s stolen assets.

Enough to keep both men from collapsing.

Except Eleanor had made the trust nearly impossible for them to touch.

Unless Claire disappeared from the equation.

Megan looked sick.

“So they destroyed your marriage on purpose.”

Claire nodded.

And suddenly dozens of memories rearranged themselves.

Ethan telling her she looked exhausted.

Ethan suggesting she stop seeing certain friends.

Ethan insisting he manage household finances.

Ethan telling Walter privately about every argument.

Ethan repeatedly asking Claire to sign “estate planning documents.”

She had refused because she didn’t understand why they were urgent.

Now Margaret reviewed those documents.

One would have nominated Ethan as Lily’s sole financial guardian if Claire became incapacitated.

Another gave Ethan broad powers over family accounts.

“He almost got you to sign away your protection voluntarily,” Margaret said.

Claire closed her eyes.

Then her phone rang.

Ethan.

His attorney had apparently advised him not to contact her.

He called anyway.

Claire put it on speaker while the detective recorded.

“Claire.”

She said nothing.

“I need to see Lily.”

“No.”

“I’m her father.”

“You helped chain her to a porch.”

“I didn’t know Dad would take it that far.”

“You adjusted the microphone yourself.”

Silence.

“You have that video.”

Not a question.

Claire looked at the detective.

“Yes.”

Ethan breathed heavily.

“Listen to me. My father controlled all of this.”

“You planted the pills.”

Another silence.

“You wrote the custody petition.”

“Claire—”

“You forged a doctor’s statement.”

Ethan’s voice cracked.

“I was trying to fix something.”

“With eight million dollars belonging to your daughter?”

“You don’t understand what happens if I can’t pay.”

Claire went cold.

“Who are you afraid of?”

He didn’t answer.

Then a sound came through the line.

A car door.

Someone shouting.

Ethan whispered:

“I made a mistake.”

Claire’s anger suddenly mixed with fear.

“Where are you?”

“Tell Lily…”

He stopped.

A second voice shouted his name.

The call ended.

Police traced the phone.

Ethan wasn’t at his attorney’s office.

He had withdrawn $180,000 cash that morning.

Then disappeared.
