Chapter 7 - The Second Trap

Police searched Claire’s car.
The pills were exactly where the photo showed them.
Under the spare tire.
Inside a cosmetics bag Claire had never seen.
Her name was printed on the pharmacy label.
But the prescription number was fake.
The detective looked at Ethan.
“You want to explain?”
His attorney answered.
“My client will not be making further statements.”
Claire couldn’t stop staring at him.
“How long?”
Ethan looked away.
“How long have you been planning to destroy me?”
Silence.
Margaret placed another document in front of the police.
Eleanor had anticipated manipulation.
Her trust required independent verification of any claim that Claire was legally unfit.
Walter and Ethan couldn’t simply show a video.
They needed something stronger.
An arrest.
Drugs.
Violence.
A documented pattern.
That was why the pills mattered.
The porch confrontation was supposed to create the violence.
The car was supposed to create the drugs.
Then came the final step.
At 11:30 that morning, Claire received an email from Child Protective Services.
A report had been filed two days earlier.
The allegations claimed Claire left Lily unattended.
Failed to feed her.
Used illegal prescription medication.
Experienced violent outbursts.
Claire’s hands shook.
Walter had starved Lily.
Then accused Claire of not feeding her.
He had chained Lily outside.
Then arranged evidence claiming Claire was dangerous.
Every cruelty had been designed to become someone else’s crime.
The detective asked Claire:
“Who knew where your spare tire compartment was?”
She thought.
“Ethan.”
“Anyone else?”
“Walter probably did.”
The detective nodded.
“We’ll process the bag.”
Three days later, the fingerprint analysis came back.
Claire’s prints were not on it.
Walter’s were.
But so were Ethan’s.
The CPS case shifted almost immediately.
Instead of investigating Claire as the primary concern, investigators reviewed evidence that two family members had deliberately endangered Lily and fabricated allegations against her mother.
Claire should have felt relief.
Instead she felt empty.
Her marriage was over.
Her daughter had been used as leverage.
Then Megan brought her a package.
“This came to my house for you.”
No return address.
Inside was an old smartphone.
And one note.
CLAIRE, DO NOT TRUST WHAT ETHAN TELLS YOU ABOUT THE PORCH. CHECK THE DELETED VIDEO.
No signature.
Claire turned on the phone.
There was one recovered clip.
The porch.
Recorded before she arrived.
Walter tightening the chain around Lily’s coat.
Then Ethan stepped into frame.
Claire stopped breathing.
Ethan knelt beside his daughter.
For one second, she thought maybe he would free her.
Instead, he adjusted the microphone under her coat.
Then he looked directly at Walter.

And said:
“Make it believable.”
