Chapter 6 - Why Lily Became the Target

Eleanor’s voice trembled on the recording.
“Ethan told me Dad deserved the money.”
Then Ethan’s recorded voice answered.
“You humiliated him.”
“I protected what was mine.”
“You put eight million dollars in a baby’s name.”
“I put it beyond his reach.”
A chair scraped.
Walter’s voice appeared next.
“You’ll regret treating us like criminals.”
Eleanor responded:
“You are criminals.”
The recording ended.
Claire sat in stunned silence.
Margaret opened another document.
Financial audits showed that Walter and Ethan had diverted nearly $1.2 million over four years.
Eleanor discovered it.
She threatened to report them.
Ethan repaid a portion.
Walter refused.
Then Eleanor got sick.
They expected her estate to solve their problem.
Instead, she placed most liquid assets into Lily’s protected trust.
Claire finally understood.
Lily wasn’t targeted because Walter hated her.
Lily was targeted because her existence blocked him from millions.
But Ethan?
Her husband?
Claire turned toward him.
“How could you let your father do that to her?”
His face cracked for the first time.
“I didn’t know he would chain her.”
“You were ten feet away.”
“I told him to create a confrontation.”
“With our baby!”
“I needed evidence that you were unstable.”
Claire stared at him.
“So you could take custody.”
“So I could protect Lily.”
“From me?”
“From what you’ve become.”
Claire almost laughed.
“What have I become?”
“Suspicious. Emotional. Controlling.”
Margaret stared at Ethan in disbelief.
Claire suddenly understood how thoroughly he had prepared.
For months, Ethan had called her “overwhelmed.”
Suggested therapy.
Told relatives she was struggling.
Insisted she take fewer freelance jobs.
Criticized her sleep.
Her memory.
Her temper.
It hadn’t been concern.
It had been a record.
A narrative.
Then the detective placed several printed screenshots on the table.
Texts between Ethan and Walter.
WALTER: She needs to lose control on camera.
ETHAN: Mention the baby. That always gets her.
WALTER: What if she walks away?
ETHAN: She won’t.
Claire stared at the final message.
Sent twenty minutes before she reached the porch.
ETHAN: I’ll be behind the door. If it goes wrong, I handle the footage.
Claire looked at him.
“You planned my reaction.”
Ethan said nothing.
She whispered:
“You knew I would defend Lily because you knew exactly how much I loved her.”
For the first time, Ethan looked ashamed.
But then Margaret found something attached to the text extraction.
A photo Ethan had sent Walter.
Claire’s car.
Inside the open trunk sat a small plastic bag containing prescription pills.
Claire stared.
“Those aren’t mine.”

The detective looked at Ethan.
