Chapter 11 - The Room Went Silent
The courtroom was packed.
Charles wore a dark suit and the expression of a man attending someone else’s trial.
Brenda sat at the opposite defense table.
She avoided looking at him.
Nicole testified first.
She described moving into the Carter home.
She explained the unexplained accounts, the hidden mail, and the pressure to sign financial papers.
Charles’s attorney tried to portray her as calculating.
“You installed cameras without telling the family?”
“I installed them after someone stole my identity.”
“You collected private conversations?”
“I protected myself in shared rooms where I legally lived.”
“Did you drive a knife into Mr. Carter’s table?”
“Yes.”
The attorney smiled.
“So you were violent.”
Nicole looked directly at the jury.
“I struck furniture after he struck my face. Then I left.”
The smile disappeared.
Maya introduced the video.
On-screen, Charles advanced toward Nicole.
His arm swung.
The slap echoed through the courtroom.

Charles stared straight ahead.

“Mr. Carter, if you believed Nicole was stealing from your family, why did you prepare evidence against her before any money was reported missing?”
Charles’s composure cracked.
“Because women like her always take what doesn’t belong to them.”

“You mean women who refuse to obey you?”
Charles struck the witness stand with his fist.
