Chapter 12 - Brenda’s Last Bargain
On the final day of testimony, Brenda’s attorney requested a private meeting with prosecutors.
She offered access to an offshore account containing two million dollars.
In exchange, she wanted a reduced sentence.
Charles heard about the offer before court resumed.
He turned toward her.
“You stole from me?”
Brenda laughed bitterly.
“From you? It was never yours.”
Years of resentment poured out.
She admitted Charles treated her like an assistant, not a wife.
He controlled every account and expected her to take every risk.
So she created her own hidden fund.
“You forged the signatures,” Charles hissed.
“Because you told me to.”
“You kept the ledger.”
“Because I knew one day you’d blame me.”
“You weak, ungrateful—”
The judge ordered them separated.
Brenda’s deal required full testimony.
On the stand, she described the entire plan.
Charles had chosen Nicole as the scapegoat after discovering she was reviewing Ryan’s failed business accounts.
The software company had not collapsed because of a lost investor.
Charles had drained it.
Ryan’s business funds had been transferred into a property venture that failed.
Charles then told Ryan the company was ruined and forced him back home.
Nicole’s financial skill made her dangerous.
Her identity made her useful.
Brenda admitted she had taken Nicole’s documents from the bedroom.
She paid Patricia to notarize the false declaration.
She placed the papers among legitimate refinancing documents.
And she sent the threatening photograph after Nicole left.
“Why?” the prosecutor asked.
Brenda looked toward Nicole.
“Because Charles said fear would bring her back.”
Nicole felt something settle inside her.
For months, she had wondered whether she had misunderstood Brenda’s manipulation.
Now there was no uncertainty.
Brenda had known exactly what she was doing.
Ryan testified last.
He admitted his cowardice without excuses.
His testimony helped prove the conspiracy.
It also ensured the jury saw his part clearly.
After deliberating for two days, the jury returned.
Charles was found guilty on every major count.
Brenda was found guilty of fraud, identity theft, forgery, conspiracy, and evidence destruction.
Ryan was found responsible for signing false statements but received a reduced sentence recommendation because of his cooperation.
Charles shouted at the jury.
Brenda collapsed into her chair.
Nicole did not smile.
Justice did not feel like celebration.
It felt like being able to breathe again.
Then the judge announced that sentencing would include restitution and forfeiture proceedings.
Everything Charles and Brenda had purchased with stolen money could be seized.
