Chapter 4 - The Blue Folder

Nicole enlarged Brenda’s photograph.

Behind her passport lay a blue folder.

Only one corner was visible, but Nicole recognized the embossed seal.

Carter Family Trust.

“Maya,” she whispered. “That’s the folder from the recording.”

Maya studied the picture.

“We need the original documents.”

“They’re in the house.”

“You are not going back alone.”

Nicole looked at the red mark reflected in Maya’s office window.

For three months, she had swallowed insult after insult because Ryan said they had nowhere else to go.

She had tolerated Brenda entering their bedroom without knocking.

She had ignored Charles reading her mail.

She had stayed because Ryan seemed depressed, ashamed, and close to breaking.

But tonight Ryan had stood ten feet away while his father struck her.

Something inside Nicole had finally gone quiet.

Not broken.

Quiet.

The kind of quiet that came before a decision.

“I don’t need to go back for the folder,” she said.

She opened her laptop and accessed the backup server connected to the home cameras.

One camera faced the study hallway.

Another captured part of Charles’s desk through the open door.

For weeks, Brenda had moved the blue folder between a locked cabinet and a wall safe.

Nicole reviewed footage until she found the safe combination reflected in a glass cabinet.

Maya stared at her.

“You notice everything.”

“It’s my job.”

They contacted Detective Elena Ruiz, a financial-crimes investigator Maya had worked with before.

Elena reviewed the evidence and agreed it was serious.

But recordings alone might not prove where the money went.

“We need account numbers, original trust documents, or testimony from someone involved,” Elena said.

Nicole knew only one living person who might have that information.

Ryan.

She finally returned his call.

He answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

“Safe.”

“Nicole, please come home.”

“Did your parents use my identity to open accounts?”

Silence.

“Ryan?”

“I didn’t know about the credit line until last week.”

“But you knew something.”

“My father said it was temporary.”

Nicole closed her eyes.

“How much did you sign?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you sign a statement accusing me of taking money?”

Ryan began breathing hard.

“They said it was just in case the auditors asked questions.”

The words hurt more than the slap.

“You signed it?”

“I was scared.”

“You were willing to send your wife to prison because you were scared?”

“I was going to fix it.”

Nicole’s voice turned cold.

“No. You were waiting for me to fix it for you.”

Ryan started crying.

Then, through the phone, Nicole heard Charles shouting in the background.

“Tell her if she goes to the police, she’ll never see a penny!”

Nicole looked at Maya and Detective Ruiz.

“A penny of what?” she asked.

Ryan whispered two words.

“Grandpa’s trust.”

👉 Ryan finally admitted the trust existed—but what he revealed next showed Nicole that Charles had been stealing from his own son for years.
