Chapter 7 - The Fireplace Compartment

Police vehicles surrounded the house within minutes.
Nicole remained in Detective Ruiz’s car while officers entered.
They found Ryan on the study floor with a bleeding lip.
Charles stood over him.
Brenda was feeding papers into the fireplace.
Officers restrained Charles.
Another officer pulled the burning pages from the flames.
Most were damaged.
But behind a loose stone beside the fireplace, Detective Ruiz discovered a metal document box.
Inside were original trust papers, bank statements, forged authorizations, and copies of Nicole’s identity documents.
There was also a handwritten ledger.
Brenda had recorded every transfer.
Not because she felt guilty.
Because she did not trust Charles.
As officers carried evidence from the home, Brenda screamed that everything belonged to her family.
Charles shouted that Nicole had manipulated Ryan.
Nicole stepped from the car.
Charles saw her and lunged against the officers holding him.
“You did this!”
Nicole remained calm.
“No, Charles. You did.”
“You came into my house and turned my son against me.”
“Your son helped you frame me.”
Ryan appeared in the doorway with an ice pack against his mouth.
He looked at Nicole.
“I’m sorry.”
She did not answer.
Brenda pointed at her.
“She planted those documents! She installed illegal cameras!”
Maya walked forward.
“The cameras were installed by a legal resident in shared areas after documented identity theft.”
Brenda’s confidence wavered.
Detective Ruiz opened the metal box.
“We also recovered Mrs. Carter’s ledger.”
Charles turned toward Brenda.
“What ledger?”
Brenda went pale.
Charles understood immediately.
“You kept records?”
“I needed protection.”
“You stupid woman.”
He moved toward her, but officers pulled him back.
Their united front shattered in seconds.
Charles accused Brenda of handling forged signatures.
Brenda screamed that Charles ordered every transfer.
Ryan watched his parents destroy each other.
Nicole felt no victory yet.
Only exhaustion.
Then Detective Ruiz approached her with a sealed envelope recovered from the box.
It had William Carter’s attorney’s name printed across the front.
The envelope had never been opened.
It was addressed to:
NICOLE CARTER, UPON EVIDENCE OF FRAUD OR COERCION AGAINST MY GRANDSON.
Nicole stared at it.
William Carter had died two years before she met Ryan.
“How could he know my name?”
Maya examined the envelope.
“He couldn’t.”
Nicole turned it over.
The label with her name had been placed over another name.
Someone had altered the envelope after William’s death.
Beneath the new label, faint letters remained.

TO THE SPOUSE OF RYAN CARTER.
👉 William Carter had anticipated that his own son might exploit Ryan—and the unopened letter contained a protection Charles had spent years hiding.
