Nicole was questioned for four hours.
The complaint included bank authorizations, loan documents, and transfer requests bearing her signature.
Some were obvious copies.
One was not.
It had been signed in blue ink.
Nicole remembered the refinancing appointment.
Charles had rushed her through a stack of papers.
Ryan kept saying they were late.
Brenda stood beside the notary and repeatedly covered sections of the documents with her hand.
Nicole had signed a page believing it authorized a mortgage review.
Instead, the page had been attached to a statement declaring that Nicole managed the Carter trust accounts.
“They obtained the signature through deception,” Maya argued.
But the prosecutor needed proof.
Charles’s attorney claimed Nicole was inventing abuse allegations after her fraud was discovered.
The family’s public reputation helped him.
Charles had served on charity boards.
Brenda organized church fundraisers.
Ryan’s former business partners described his parents as generous.

Nicole read only one headline.
Then she turned off her phone.
“This is what they wanted,” she said.

“They expected you to panic.”

She reconstructed the timing of every transaction.
The forged documents showed Nicole authorizing transfers on dates when she had been elsewhere.
One transfer was submitted while she attended a professional conference in Chicago.
Another used an internet address linked to Charles’s study.
The strongest document—the one with her real signature—had been notarized by a woman named Patricia Wells.
Patricia was Brenda’s cousin.
Detective Ruiz visited Patricia’s office.
It was empty.
Her home was empty too.
She had left the state that morning.
Brenda claimed she knew nothing.
Charles refused to speak.
Then Nicole remembered the laundry basket.
For weeks, Brenda had used it to carry papers between the bedroom and study.
