Chapter 3 - The Dead Man’s Signature

The recording had been captured at 1:14 in the morning.

Charles and Brenda believed everyone was asleep.

Nicole watched them spread legal papers across the kitchen counter.

Brenda pointed to a signature at the bottom of one page.

“It still looks too clean,” she whispered.

Charles took the paper.

“My father’s been dead for four years. No one remembers exactly how he signed.”

Nicole leaned closer to the screen.

Charles’s father, William Carter, had founded Carter Industrial Holdings decades earlier.

According to Ryan, William had sold the company before his death and left little behind except the family home.

But the documents in the recording told a different story.

Nicole paused the video and enlarged the page.

She could read only fragments.

IRREVOCABLE TRUST.

BENEFICIARY.

TWENTY-THREE MILLION.

Then Charles said something that made her stop breathing.

“Once Ryan signs the liability statement, everything points to Nicole. The accounts, the missing trust distributions, all of it.”

Brenda smiled.

“And Ryan?”

“He’ll do what he always does.”

“What’s that?”

“Whatever we tell him.”

Nicole closed the video.

For months, she had blamed Ryan’s weakness on fear.

Now she wondered how much he already knew.

She called the only person she trusted professionally: Maya Brooks, an attorney who specialized in financial crimes.

Maya answered on the second ring.

“Nicole? It’s almost midnight.”

“I need you to watch something.”

Twenty minutes later, they met inside Maya’s office downtown.

Maya viewed the recordings without interruption.

When Charles struck Nicole, Maya’s jaw tightened.

When Brenda discussed forging William’s signature, Maya began taking notes.

When Charles spoke about framing Nicole, Maya stopped the video.

“This is bigger than domestic abuse,” she said.

“How much bigger?”

“If these documents are real, they may have diverted trust assets, committed identity theft, forged estate records, and planned to make you the fall person.”

Nicole wrapped her arms around herself.

“Why me?”

“Because you understand financial records. If irregularities were discovered, they could claim you manipulated the accounts.”

Nicole thought of the credit line opened in her name.

The missing bank notices.

Ryan’s refusal to answer simple questions.

Maya leaned forward.

“Did you ever sign financial documents for Ryan?”

“A refinancing package two months ago.”

“Did you read every page?”

“Most of them.”

“Most?”

Ryan had rushed her.

His father had stood over her.

Brenda had kept saying the notary was waiting.

Nicole felt sick.

Maya’s voice softened.

“They may already have your signature.”

At that moment, Nicole’s phone buzzed.

A message from Brenda appeared.
