Chapter 5 - The Son They Controlled

Ryan drove to Maya’s office before sunrise.
He looked ten years older.
His eyes were swollen, and his hands would not stop moving.
Nicole sat across from him without touching him.
Detective Ruiz placed a recorder on the table.
“Start at the beginning,” she said.
Ryan stared at the floor.
“When my grandfather died, he left a trust for me and any children I might have.”
Nicole’s breath caught.
She and Ryan had been trying to have a baby for nearly a year.
Ryan continued.
“My father said the trust was tied up in taxes. He told me I couldn’t access it until I turned thirty-five.”
“You’re thirty-three,” Nicole said.
Ryan nodded.
“But last year I found a statement. The trust had already been distributing money.”
“How much?”
“Almost four million dollars over four years.”
Nicole felt the room tilt.
“Where did it go?”
“To companies my father controlled.”
Charles had used Ryan’s inheritance to fund real-estate purchases, luxury travel, and Brenda’s private accounts.
When Ryan discovered it, Charles threatened him.
“He said I had approved every transfer.”
“Had you?” Detective Ruiz asked.
Ryan swallowed.
“He put papers in front of me for years. I signed without reading them.”
Nicole’s disappointment hardened.
“And when the missing money became too obvious, they chose me.”
Ryan’s eyes filled.
“My father said investigators would believe you planned it because you’re an accountant. He made me sign a statement saying you handled our finances.”
“You knew that was false.”
“Yes.”
“Did you care what would happen to me?”
Ryan looked up, devastated.
“I kept telling myself I’d destroy the statement later.”
“But you didn’t.”
“No.”
Nicole removed her wedding ring and placed it on the table.
Ryan stared at it.
“Nicole, don’t.”
“Your father hit me, and you asked me to come back.”
“I was trying to calm him down.”
“You were trying to make me easier to control.”
Ryan covered his face.
Detective Ruiz asked whether he would cooperate.
Ryan hesitated.
Then his phone rang.
Charles’s name appeared.
Ryan declined the call.
Seconds later, Brenda texted him.
YOUR FATHER KNOWS WHERE NICOLE’S SISTER LIVES.
Nicole stood so quickly that her chair scraped backward.
Her younger sister, Emma, lived alone with her six-year-old daughter.
Charles was no longer trying to protect himself.
He was threatening innocent people.
Detective Ruiz took the phone.
“This changes things.”
Nicole looked at Ryan.
“You have one chance to stop being their son and start being responsible for what you’ve done.”
Ryan’s face collapsed.
“What do you need me to do?”
Nicole answered without hesitation.

“Go home.”
👉 Ryan agreed to return to his parents wearing a recording device—but Charles was already preparing a trap of his own.
