Chapter 12 - Vanessa Told Emily the One Thing Ryan Never Did

Months later, Vanessa asked to meet Emily.
Emily almost declined.
Then agreed.
Public café.
No Ryan.
Vanessa looked embarrassed.
“I owe you something.”
“You already gave the messages.”
“Not that.”
She slid over a small jewelry box.
Inside was Emily’s wedding ring.
Emily stopped breathing.
“I thought that was lost after the accident.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Ryan gave it to me.”
Emily stared.
“When?”
“Four months ago.”
“Why?”
“He said it belonged to the past.”
Emily’s face hardened.
“Did you wear it?”
“No.”
“Why keep it?”
“I don’t know.”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Maybe because some part of me knew it wasn’t mine.”
Emily took the ring.
That hurt more than expected.
Ryan had physically removed a symbol of Emily’s marriage while she was still alive.
Then Vanessa said:
“There’s something else.”
Emily waited.
“The night before the wedding, Ryan almost canceled.”
“Why?”
“He got a call from the rehab facility.”
Emily’s pulse jumped.
“They told him?”
“That you were asking for discharge.”
Ryan knew.
The day before the wedding.
He knew Emily might leave the facility.
And still went ahead.
Vanessa continued.
“He said if you showed up, he’d deal with it.”
Emily whispered:
“How?”
“I asked.”
“What did he say?”
“He said people would believe you were confused.”
Emily went still.
That was the final layer.
Ryan wasn’t merely hoping she stayed away.
He had prepared to discredit her if she appeared.
Vanessa started crying.
“I should’ve walked away then.”
“Yes.”
“I know.”
Emily took the ring.
Then stood.
Vanessa said:
“I’m sorry.”
Emily looked at her.
“I believe you regret it.”
Vanessa nodded.
That was all Emily could offer.
Later, Emily showed James the ring.
He cursed.
Then asked:
“What are you going to do with it?”
Emily thought.
“Nothing yet.”
A week later, Ryan asked to speak after a supervised visit.
Emily agreed.
He looked at the ring on her hand.
Not worn.
Held.
“You have it.”
“Yes.”
“Vanessa gave it back.”
“Yes.”
Ryan looked down.
“I shouldn’t have given it away.”
“No.”
“I shouldn’t have done any of this.”
Emily waited.
Then Ryan said:
“I knew you might come to the wedding.”
She stared.
“I know.”
His face changed.
“Vanessa told you.”
“Yes.”
Ryan looked ashamed.
“I was going to say you were confused.”
“I know that too.”
He closed his eyes.
There was nothing left to hide.
Emily asked:
“Do you understand why I can’t forgive you yet?”
“Yes.”
“Do you understand why Lily may never trust you the same way?”
Ryan’s voice broke.
“Yes.”
For once, he did not ask for another chance.

He simply accepted the damage.
👉 Vanessa returned Emily’s wedding ring—and revealed Ryan had planned to discredit Emily as mentally confused if she appeared at the ceremony.
