Chapter 2 - Emily Was Alive

The woman was Emily Carter.
There was no dramatic uncertainty after that.
James knew his sister’s voice.
Lily knew the way Emily touched her face.
Even Ryan knew there was no point pretending.
But the question became worse.
Where had Emily been?
James took Lily to a private lounge beside the ballroom.
Emily followed slowly.
She looked exhausted.
Lily stood frozen.
Emily crouched.
“I know you’re scared.”
Lily stared at her.
“Dad said you died.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Then nodded.
“I know.”
“Why?”
Emily looked toward the ballroom.
“That’s what I came here to find out.”
James turned.
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
Emily’s hands began shaking.
She told them she had been in a rehabilitation facility outside Austin for nearly eleven months.
Not for addiction.
For neurological recovery.
A year earlier, she suffered a serious head injury after falling down the stairs at home.
Ryan told everyone she died from complications.
James stared.
“Nobody called me.”
“Ryan said you didn’t want anything to do with me.”
James’s face changed.
“He said what?”
Emily nodded.
“He told me you blamed me for Lily getting hurt.”
James sat down.
None of that was true.
He had spent months trying to contact Emily.
Ryan told him she was receiving hospice care.
Then, eventually, that she died.
No funeral.
Ryan claimed Emily’s final wish was private cremation.
James had hated him for it.
Now he understood why.
There had been nothing to bury.
Emily continued.
“Ryan also told me Lily was better without me.”
Lily immediately started crying.
“No!”
Emily pulled her close.
That was the first real reunion.
Not cinematic.
Messy.
Confused.
Lily clung to her mother.
Emily sobbed into her hair.
James looked away.
Then Emily whispered something only he heard.
“I didn’t come here because I suddenly got better.”
James looked back.
“Then why?”
She opened her purse.
Inside was a folded envelope.
“I found something in my discharge papers.”
“What?”
“Legal documents.”
James’s expression tightened.
Emily continued.
“Ryan filed for sole control of Lily’s trust while I was still alive.”
James stared.
“What trust?”
Emily looked toward the ballroom.
May you like
“The one Vanessa thinks she’s marrying into.”
👉 Emily’s disappearance wasn’t only about separating a mother from her child—Ryan had used her supposed “death” to gain control of a trust tied directly to Lily.
