Chapter 6 - Emily Had Tried to Call Lily

Sarah obtained Emily’s rehabilitation records.

They were devastating.

Emily had requested family contact repeatedly.

Day 12:

Patient asks for daughter.

Day 18:

Patient asks why husband has not visited.

Day 26:

Patient says husband told staff not to bring child.

Day 41:

Patient requests brother James.

James stopped reading.

Ryan had told him Emily couldn’t tolerate visitors.

The records showed the opposite.

Then another note.

Patient attempted outgoing call to minor daughter.

Call blocked by authorized family representative.

Authorized representative:

Ryan Carter.

Emily stared.

“You blocked me from calling Lily.”

Ryan remained silent.

Lily looked confused.

“Mom called?”

Emily immediately crouched.

“Yes.”

“You did?”

“So many times.”

Lily started crying.

Ryan said:

“This is why I didn’t want this happening in front of her.”

James snapped:

“No. You didn’t want the truth happening in front of her.”

Then Sarah found an audio note.

A therapist had recorded Emily with consent during memory rehabilitation.

Emily’s voice:

“Please tell Lily I didn’t leave.”

Another:

“Ryan says she’s happier without me.”

Another:

“I don’t believe him anymore.”

Lily buried her face against Emily.

Ryan looked away.

The image-conscious groom was collapsing.

Then Vanessa asked:

“Why did you tell me Emily refused to see Lily?”

Ryan snapped:

“Because I was trying to protect everyone.”

Emily looked at him.

“From what?”

He finally answered.

“From losing everything.”

The room became silent.

James stared.

“There it is.”

Ryan immediately tried to correct himself.

“I meant the house. Stability. Lily’s future.”

Sarah said:

“You meant control.”

Ryan looked at her.

The trust had already paid more than $600,000 in distributions during Emily’s supposed death period.

Ryan had approved purchases.

A new investment.

Wedding expenses.

The country club deposit.

Emily looked around.

“You paid for this wedding with my family trust?”

Ryan said nothing.

Vanessa slowly looked at the ballroom decorations.

Her face turned pale.

Even she hadn’t known that.

Emily started laughing.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes betrayal became too absurd for tears.

Then Sarah found a larger withdrawal.

$1.4 million.

Transferred three weeks earlier.

Recipient:

Carter Family Residential Holdings.

Ryan controlled it.

James asked:

“What did you buy?”

Ryan hesitated.

Sarah searched the public record.

Then looked up.

“A house.”

Vanessa smiled nervously.

“Our house.”

Sarah shook her head.

“No.”

The title wasn’t in Ryan and Vanessa’s names.

It was solely in Ryan’s.

And the purchase had been funded with money derived from the trust Emily’s father created for Emily and Lily.

👉 Ryan had used Emily’s family trust to finance his new wedding and house—but one $1.4 million purchase showed Vanessa was being deceived too.
