Chapter 7 - Ryan Had Lied to Vanessa Too

Vanessa stared at the property record.
“You said my name was on the house.”
Ryan said:
“It was going to be.”
“When?”
“After the wedding.”
Sarah shook her head.
“No pending deed exists.”
Vanessa slowly removed her hand from Ryan’s arm.
Emily watched.
No satisfaction.
Vanessa had helped hurt her.
But Ryan had been using Vanessa too.
James asked:
“How much of this wedding is trust money?”
Ryan said nothing.
Sarah’s answer:
“Potentially most of it.”
Vanessa looked sick.
“You told me your business was doing well.”
“It is.”
“Then why use the trust?”
Ryan’s composure cracked.
“Because it was available.”
Emily stared.
“My father’s money was available?”
Ryan snapped:
“I managed it!”
“For Lily.”
“I am Lily’s father.”
“That didn’t make it yours.”
Lily flinched at Ryan’s raised voice.
James immediately moved in front of her.
Ryan noticed.
His anger cooled.
Too late.
Vanessa stepped backward.
Then said:
“I’m not marrying you.”
Ryan turned.
“Vanessa.”
“No.”
“You’re emotional.”
She laughed.
“That’s your favorite word when women stop obeying you.”
Emily looked at her.
For the first time, something almost like mutual recognition passed between them.
Then Ryan tried another tactic.
“Think about how this looks.”
Vanessa stared.
“That’s all you care about.”
The ballroom.
The tuxedo.
The guests waiting outside.
The reputation.
Always the image.
Vanessa removed her veil.
Dropped it on the chair.
Ryan looked horrified.
Not because he was losing her.
Because people might see.
James noticed.
“You slapped your daughter and lied about your wife being dead.”
He pointed toward the ballroom.
“And you’re worried about the ceremony?”
Ryan’s face hardened.
Then Sarah received another document.
The rehabilitation facility had an emergency-contact authorization.
Primary:
Ryan.
Secondary:
Vanessa.
Emily stared at Vanessa.
“You were allowed to make decisions for me?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never used it.”
“Did you know?”
“No.”
Sarah believed her.
The authorization was dated before Vanessa said she knew the full situation.
Ryan had been creating authority around people without telling them.
Then Emily asked:
“Who signed Vanessa onto my file?”
Sarah looked at the page.
Ryan.
Again.
Then another name.
Dr. Paul Hart.
Medical director.
Ryan had paid Hart privately as a consultant through Carter Family Residential Holdings.
James’s expression changed.
The same company that purchased the new house had also paid Emily’s facility director.
That moved the story beyond one controlling husband.

Ryan had professional help.
👉 Vanessa finally walked away from the wedding—but payments to Emily’s medical director suggested Ryan had paid someone inside the facility to keep her isolated.
