Chapter 3 - The Trust Ryan Never Mentioned

Emily’s father had created the trust before he died.

James knew the family had assets.

He did not know the details.

Emily did.

The trust held land outside Dallas.

Commercial property.

Investment accounts.

And shares in a regional development company.

Current value:

Approximately twelve million dollars.

James stared.

“And Lily inherits?”

“Not directly yet.”

Emily explained.

The trust had one unusual condition.

While Emily was alive and legally competent, she controlled the family branch.

If Emily died, control moved temporarily to Lily’s surviving parent.

Ryan.

Until Lily reached adulthood.

James understood immediately.

“If you’re dead on paper…”

“Ryan controls everything.”

“And if you’re alive?”

“He doesn’t.”

Silence.

Emily pulled out copies.

Petitions.

Declarations.

A statement claiming Emily had died.

Another saying Ryan was Lily’s sole surviving parent.

Then James found a signature.

Vanessa Brooks.

Witness.

James went still.

“She witnessed this?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

The wedding had been planned for six months.

Vanessa knew Ryan was legally claiming Emily was dead while Emily was physically alive in a care facility.

James looked toward the ballroom doors.

“She knew.”

Emily nodded.

Then Lily spoke.

“Vanessa said Mom didn’t want me.”

Emily froze.

“What?”

Lily looked frightened.

“She said you left because I cried too much.”

Emily’s face crumpled.

James’s anger returned.

“How long has she been saying that?”

Lily shrugged.

“Sometimes.”

Emily stood.

For the first time, she did not look frail.

She looked furious.

James stopped her.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because Ryan’s going to lie.”

“He already did.”

“Yes. Which means we don’t confront him with emotion.”

James pointed to the papers.

“We confront him with proof.”

Emily looked at her brother.

Then nodded.

James called an attorney he trusted.

Sarah Nolan.

She agreed to come to the country club.

Meanwhile, Ryan had not left.

Why?

Because the wedding guests were still there.

His image mattered too much.

He was trying to contain the story.

That gave them time.

Then Emily remembered something.

“There’s another document.”

“What?”

“I didn’t have it with me.”

“Where is it?”

“In a safe-deposit box.”

James frowned.

Emily looked at him.

“My doctor told me Ryan had me sign papers while I was heavily medicated.”

“What papers?”

“I don’t know.”

James’s jaw tightened.

Then Emily added:

May you like

“But one of them had Vanessa’s name on it.”

👉 Ryan’s trust scheme was already bad—but Emily now remembered signing documents while medically impaired, and Vanessa’s name appeared on at least one of them.
