Chapter 8 - Dr. Hart Had Been Paid to Delay Discharge
Dr. Paul Hart denied wrongdoing.
Initially.
Then auditors found the invoices.
“Private family consultation.”
“Continuity planning.”
“Post-discharge risk assessment.”
Total:
$180,000.
Paid by Ryan’s company.
Sarah looked at him during a recorded deposition.
“What did Ryan want?”
Hart hesitated.
“He wanted stability.”
“That word again.”
Hart continued.
Emily’s condition improved faster than expected.
By month five, several therapists recommended partial discharge.
Hart delayed it.
“Why?”
“I believed family circumstances were unstable.”
“Based on what?”
“Ryan’s reports.”
Emily stared.
“What reports?”
Ryan repeatedly told Hart that Lily was terrified of Emily.
That James was hostile.
That Emily had made threats.
None of it was documented elsewhere.
Hart never independently verified most claims.
Sarah asked:
“Did Ryan ask you to delay discharge until after a legal transfer?”
Hart’s attorney objected.
Then emails were shown.
Ryan:
Can we maintain residential status through March?
Hart:
Clinically difficult if improvement continues.
Ryan:
I need time to resolve family issues.
March was the month Lily’s trust control transferred.
Hart finally admitted Ryan’s payments created a conflict he should have disclosed.
That admission triggered medical-board scrutiny.
But something else came out.
Hart had not known Ryan told people Emily was dead.
When he heard, his face changed completely.
“I never authorized that.”
Emily believed him.
He had behaved unethically.
But Ryan’s deception went further than Hart understood.
Then Hart revealed something.
“Emily tried to leave once.”
James turned.
“When?”
“Seven months ago.”
She packed a bag.
Walked to the front entrance.
Ryan arrived.
Emily stared.
“You came?”
Ryan looked down.
Memory returned in fragments.
A black SUV.
Ryan standing outside.
Telling her Lily cried whenever someone mentioned her.
Telling her James wanted custody if Emily returned.
Telling her:
“If you love Lily, stop destroying her life.”
Emily whispered:
“You made me go back inside.”
Ryan said:
“You weren’t ready.”
“No.”
Emily looked straight at him.
“You made me believe my daughter was afraid of me.”
Lily heard.
She immediately broke from James and ran to Emily.
“I wasn’t!”
Emily pulled her close.
“I know, baby.”
Ryan looked away.
That was the moment whatever defense remained collapsed emotionally.
Then Sarah’s investigator called.
Claire—no, Emily—had mentioned a safe-deposit box.
It had been located.
Opened under proper authority.
Inside were old family documents.
One changed everything.
A prenuptial agreement Ryan signed with Emily eight years earlier.
If Ryan knowingly misrepresented Emily’s death or incapacity to control the trust, he could lose any marital claim to the Carter family assets.
Ryan had not simply risked losing control.
